It's a VIN, not a VIN number, VIN = Vehicle Identification Number.
Why would you say Number twice?
.
Oh dear, pedant alert. Why not come back when you have something useful to contribute."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

Take a look at post 4 and you will see that I already have. Now run along until you have something worthwhile to say."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

I can't see any benefit to having the VIN on display on a car you own. Sure it makes it slightly easier to check if you are buying a car, but it's probably also easier to fake since most of them appear to be printed, and I suspect a lot of buyers could be fooled by slipping a piece of paper down there with a new VIN on it.
Mine's on a little plate at the back of the engine bay and also engraved in huge letters on the firewall. I'm sure it could still be faked given sufficient time and effort, but it will be a lot harder.

it also allows police to check vin to tax disc to number plate

They were introduced originally in the USA as a way allowing police officers there to check the VIN without having to search the car to find it.
Faking the VIN is not that easy as it usually involves cutting out the old stamped in VIN and welding in a new plate and then stamping a new VIN in. The visible VIN would also have to be changed. Most stolen vehicles out there have had a simple number plate change and the VIN hasn't even been touched."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

Just as an aside to this, The other day I phone Orange to get my PAC, and even the lady on the phone called it a PAC Code.
Yes they do, it isn't correct though, i.e no one say NHS Service, because the S stands for Service, same as RAC, they don't say RAC Club, because the C stands for Club.
There are plenty more but!

They used to say say RAC club if they were going to the RAC Club in Blythswood Square. Now it's a posh hotel. http://www.townhousecompany.com/blythswoodsquare/about_us/history.aspx

If we're all being picky pedants, shouldn't the OP have written "registration plate" rather than "number plate" ?0
