I'm always grateful to kittie for she is the one who opened my eyes to the state we're in!
Ceridw, I have lived & worked with some quite extremes of society (for want of a better phrase lol) - and I find that people are just people. You could take a bucketful of aristocrats, a bucketful of miners, a bucketful of church elders, and a bucketful of red indians LOL - and each of those buckets would have a cross section of the good, the bad, the spiritual and the materialistic. People are just people, the wrapper doesnt matter at all - it's what's inside that counts.
So we have a great mix in this bucket - but we all share a common outlook. ;)
EDITED- Wow HJ, we seem to have been thinking the same thing! OOOO spooky!

Smileyt I hope you get things worked out soon.

Sometimes I feel I dont have alot too offer this thread.
But one thing I love about it people are so supportive of each other when they are down or unwell. I dont have much of a family left here in Northern Ireland, but when I am feeling down I get my cup of tea and come on here and read its like family here.
By the end of the thread I am either laughing or crying.:)

(If you are really brave, you could make a hay box out of a large box and a lot of fresh straw. One of the Imperial War Museum's reprinted leaflet collections/"Make Do and Mend" books has instructions.)

Be careful - I follwed a HFW recipe for lamb in hay. My hay was too good quality - all the herbs and flowers made the lamb taste so strong I could barely eat it. The kitchen also stunk for a week :o

Re personal/politics - I tend not to read/remember who has posted which particular message so I don't pick up who has said what, when and to whom.
Seems to save me a lot of worrying :p on the flipside I may come across as ignorant or not "personal", for which I apologise in advance.

I've not got the heating on yet, and once this month's bills have gone I want to switch bank accounts - and cut my overdraft down. If it's not there, I'm not tempted to spend it. The trouble is, I was hoping for an ethical-ish bank but the Co-op's rates were awful. I might go for building society. I think it's important to simplify everything, from bills to food to lifestyle. Otherwise I tend to go around in circles always wondering if I've got the right thing, or the best thing....

    Best wishes to all

I can resonate with always wondering whether we've done the best thing.

Recalls enviously when home services were just down to it was B.T. for the phoneline and the Gas Board for gas and Electric Board for electric. No thinking - we just got what we got and didnt have to worry about whether we were "getting the best deal" or no. These days - its constant comparison stuff to see whether we have the cheapest deal we can get/take into account any other factors we are taking into account (eg ethical for instance).

There's pros and cons to things changing in that respect. Its a right pain to be sure we're "doing the best we can" re our services on the one hand and, in the case of some of us personally, I am looking enviously at the level of facilities those protestors by St Pauls Cathedral have currently. Back in my day - it was a MUCH more long-winded process to keep in touch with each other and wecouldnt apply for jobs whilst "doing our bit" (if we were unemployed) - because it involved things like buying newspapers and sending in letters. These days - I could sit on the steps of St Pauls Cathedral "doing my bit" and, at the same time, apply for jobs (if I needed one), scan the daily newspapers, do my shopping, read a huge collection of books, etc.

So - some things change for the better..some for the worse.

I'd rather have "my era" again - even with the extra difficulties in day-to-day living brought about by the longwinded way we had to go about things in many respects/only being able to phone companies during "standard office hours" etc - than the present one - where I personally find life a lot easier in some respects...but its a heck of a lot more insecure/the positive "things are gonna get better" feeling has gone into reverse/etc.
  • Helen the co-op have an offer on just now to switch your current account to then and you get #200 after four months. Might be worth a lookm

I was toying with being OS extravagant and buying this: http://www.thebookpeople.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/qs_product_tbp?storeId=10001&catalogId=10051&langId=100&productId=250718&searchTerm=slow+cooker

It's only £2.99 and they have another book I thought DD might like for Xmas...I really like the idea of a slow curry :D

  • I have been a long time reader, sometimes poster of this thread and I love it, but I missed the opening of the new one due to life taking over for a few days, eventually realised I was missing something and found you all, and the 29 PAGES of chat!!!! I have cheated and skipped to the last few, so I hope I haven't missed too much, but I am subscribed now and will try to keep up.
