The plumber is going to phone this morning and I'm going to set the RV on him. Thats us in the 6th weeks now with no heating. Problem is the HA sub-contracts him, he's a local trademan in Hawick. The HA own people are great and I've never waited this long for a repair in my life. First we got the story how the builder was on holiday & he needed him to do a quote; then the plumber was on holiday and in the middle somewhere there was a story about an ill brother.....
Haribo I think we've got the tail end or the vanguard of your storm cos its bloody horrible outside. Baltic!
The doc said I have highish cholestrol when I got tested last week - but I think that's because I dont get any exersize. I honestly dont eat as many sweeties as some people on here seem to think :D and in fact I dont eat much at all.
I cant get a$$ in gear at all re the C word. is anybody else ignoring it as well?

I feel as though I left my postings hanging in the ether, lol, so now I want to wrap them up.

A little bit of background first and why I started the first `getting tougher` thread in 2006

I am in my 60s, the eldest of 6 siblings and from a poor hard working family up north. A mother with plenty of aspiration for all of us who showed me how to make and do and a dad who worked until he dropped when I was just 21. Grammar school and a degree in physics and later in the 80s, 4 years study for a good alternative medicine qualification. A very kind and good dh in 70, then 3 children, mortgage and very hard times through the 70s and 80s when all I had learnt from a very young age stood us in good stead. All hm stuff and second hand and hand me downs all through, so staying debt free.

I always had an interest in the stock market and in the 90s followed through by studying TA (technical analysis) by home study and several courses in london, where I was asked to think about joining the society of technical analyists (I didn`t). I day traded for a while and stayed above water, whilst I learnt on my feet. Dh retired and his company pension had to be moved so we engaged an IFA who used a sprat to catch a mackerel, dh went to london one day day second class and saw IFA getting on board in first class. That was the shove I needed, also by then we knew that his `advice` in year 2 would cost us about 30k + charges year on year and he spoke about hedge funds, me keeping stum about the fact that I know how hedge funds deal. I came on mse and found a poster (who passed on) called edinvestor and what an inspiration she was, giving me the courage to take over my dh`s lifelong pension and to manage it. I did it with his blessing, giving me third party authority to handle all his transactions ( obviously he trusts me). I learnt all about the paperwork and A day and so on and I rejoined with various stockmarket contacts. The pot has grow to date by 42% and that in spite of drawing down for 2 years. I learnt a huge amount and started to fear for the future and for the lives of ordinary people

I, being the caring sharing type, decided to start the first 2006 thread as I could see the dangers ahead and there wasn`t time to lose. To get through the `nasty` future, people had to draw in and try to become debt free. Altruistic? yes that is me. I care about people

On that on it went and 2008 hit us all like a bombshell, not helped one bit by de-rampers who went on every internet site they could find, spreading panic and we all know the results. De-ramping and rumors are commonplace in the stockmarket world. A distant in law got rich, he owned a big hedge fund.

Dangers are very close to the surface and I tried to get people to think outside the box a few weeks ago but as someone pointed out to me that this is not my thread and economics was not up for discussion. Point taken, thank you pink winged and others who have made me see the error of my ways and given me my personal time back :)

So now a very big welcome to all the lurkers and newbies :). You will find many any hints and tips on thread one

I am now logging out of this thread, with a note re my non-freezer preserving experiments this year. A hugely good result and am now eating cabbage and green beans at least 2 months old. One or two methods failed but it was always going to be trial and error

you will still see me about on mse from time to time but only on a fleeting superficial level. My public time is done re economics and the future

Lots of love and luck to all my virtual friends :)

Thanks for sharing that. I am not sure i will be able to put in words everything that i would like to say. I really appreciate that you began the thread and can see that the world needs people who can look ahead and who are willing to try and help others thro sticky times by sharing that knowledge.

All threads have a tendancy to go off topic here and there and one like this, which as stated before, seems like a conversation between friends over a cuppa is even more likely to. All the hints, tips and advice given on the thread, about various things, have been appreciated by all, i am sure.

I think that there is a place on the site for a thread regarding the economic climate and i, for one, would be interested to read it (i guess i should look around the other boards!). We are in a bit of a similar situation where we have drawn down a lot of OH's pension but have invested ours in property - it certainly won't be growing by 42%, so well done you. But we are cautious investors who don't understand the ins and outs of stocks.

THanks very much to you for starting the thread and i'm sorry that you feel you can no longer contribute. I feel a bit sad - have a nice day everyone.
I wanna be in the room where it happens

  • It's raining cats and dogs here this morning.
Thank you for cpming back and drawing a line under your involvement,Kittie. I so hate it when posters disappear, and you don't know what has happened to them. I for one, shall miss your posts, although I have to say I am a bit disappointed you saw fit to remove your original posts from the start of each.threD you had started.. New posters or visitors to those threads would have learned a lot from those posts.

Onwards and upwards here, I am determined to get out in this foul weather today to get winter jackets and boots sorted out for myboys. I really just want to stick a pot of soup on and hide in the house :o

A de lurker logging in but it has taken me so long to read this thread and it moves so fast I dont know when I will be able to post again!!

A complete change of life for me and I am at home again not working outside the house after many many years. 55 years old with my 2 step children still here at 20 and 21. DH works and is 10 years younger (lucky me) :-) So I need to learn better to manage the budget rather than just doing what I feel like when I earned and also getting my house into shape now I have all the time in the world to do so rather than sitting watching Jeremy Kyle etc etc (getting bored already with that one LOL)
I want to get into a routine with some activity as I want to look at my fitness levels as well.
Why this thread? You are all so helpful understanding and chatty I have felt at home just reading through.
I hope you don't mind if I hang around.
