Personally I think you should let him carry on trying to work it out for himself rather than ask for the answer on here. His teacher needs to know if he is finding it hard working out the answer so that he/she can help your son understand how to do it. If a similar question comes up in an exam he will have to work it out for himself. I don't think it is doing him any favours in the long run.
That's exactly what the OP is saying!
They're saying they won't post them all on here as if they did he'd get all the answers without doing it himself!

He's not struggling, he knows how to work it out now. He did exactly what he was supposed to, if u don't know, ask!

Well in your OP, you said he was "stumped" which to me would indicate he was struggling with a question and did not know how to arrive at the answer, hence the reason you asked for help on the forum. I was merely giving my opinion which was to speak to the teacher and ask him/her to go over it again with him so he can be sure he knows how to work it out if it comes up in an exam.

But does it matter if the teacher goes through it with him, or if the parent does? As long as the parent actually does go through it and not just give the answer, it's the same really. It might actually be better because teachers have one method and another person helping can introduce a new method. Additionally, if everyone else in the class gets it the teacher might not have time!

  • If you don't understand WHY you're doing something a certain way in maths, just remember HOW to do it.

Maths is formulaic, it's regular, it follows patterns and set routines. Sometimes it's about remembering patterns and applying these patterns to different situations. Sometimes people get too bogged down in the 'philosophy' of it all and confuse themselves!

It doesn't have to be taxing :)

that was my problem with math. i could do it but i didnt understand it and as im a logical kinda person i really struggled with it even though i was in the top 10% of my school.

having said that as soon as i got a new teacher everything suddenly "clicked" and i "got it".

if you dont understand something you need to ask. OP did the right thing by asking esp on a friday night when most kids would leave their homework to sunday night then have a blind panic when they couldnt get it done for double math on monday morning!

My 13 yo son is stumped on this question, and as its been a long time since i've done ratios :o i cant help on this part.

Write each of the following ratios in the form 1:n
(how do we find the n value?)

    10 : 9
    I think the answer should be 1 : 1.11111
    based on 10 / 10 = 1
    10 / 9 = 1.111111

can anyone correct and expain the correct working out please

    10:9

    10/10 = 1 : 9/10 = 0.9

    = 1:0.9

the other part is in the from n : 1

    12 : 25

    12/25=? :25/25=1

there are more questions but if i post them all on here he will get the answer without doing it for himself :rotfl:.
