Interesting that you got permanent jobs as a result of temping jobs. Was the permanent job you got 'more of the same'? eg. you did filing while temping, then got a permanent office job? Or you did filing while temping for, say a radio station, then when a more broadcast-orientated job opened up the station gave you a chance because they got to know you from when you temped filing for them? (I used radio as an example because that's what we like, apply it to whatever profession you're in! eg. office work for a clothes company led on to being a fashion buyer?)
    both...

A frined of mine thought she wanted to work in HR, but was not sure if she wanted to do that long term, ended up temping (yes filing!) for an HR dept of an international bank. Was hired after a couple of months as an HR administrator. After a year, they sponsored her to do an HR masters at the LSE.

Unless you are a genius and have contacts in the field, filing and doing menial work is the first step. If you are prepared to put your pride to one side and get on on with it, you'll have steady stream of work.:)

Congrats, I truly hope you are very happy- it sounds like you are putting in the work upfront and so I hope you reap the rewards. The impending move will be a massive incentive to do well in those finals exams!!!

Keep us updated (we're a nosy lot!).

I'd just say that I studied in Manchester and I LOVED it: great place. I found it really easy to get temp work then when required, although that was many moons ago now ;)

I'd say if you want to do it now is the time! Accept that you might be in casual jobs for a while though. If your girlfriend will be waitressing I'd encourage her to get a job near to some of the TV stations or newspapers if she might like a career in this. Or indeed if there are any office temp type jobs in these orgs, go for it. The BBC in particular are good at promoting from inside if people come in doing clerical work to see the lay of the land. It will all be about contacts unfortunately. Hopefully though you wouldn't have to eat too far into savings if you keep outgoings to a minimum (by using this site :) ). Good luck
