Tesco wireless router says 52mb speed, internet ony 8mb..

So, where did the 44mb difference go?!

Signal strength 'very good', pc is close to / in clear sight of the router..

manufacturer's own cable used from box to BT wall socket..
Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

The wireless link from your Laptop to the router is running at 50 odd Mbps, The internet link between the router and the telephone exchange is running at 8Mbps.
This is normal, unless you are on BT Infinity FTTC when you may have cause for complaint!

It's two different speed measurements - 1 speed is your broadband connection (the modem connected to BT exhange) and the other speed is your wireless signal between modem and computer. The two are unrelated except that your computer gets the broadband connectivity via the wireless connection.

    They are not unrelated.

    Little misleading to say that.

You will get an internet speed of the minimum of the local wireless and the internet speed.

If you got 20 mbps from your internet provider but your wireless connection was rubbish and only giving you 10 mbps.. you would get an internet connection through that router of 10mbps.

    Its just bottlenecks.

Did have to laugh at this question though, thought was a wind up :P

not to mention, 802.11g is a signalling rate of 54mbit/sec... to get anything over 25mbps is seen as a miracle, even on a line of sight.

Fair comment , the two speeds are referring to two different connections but as you rightly say, could have an adverse effect on each other.

I forget that people can get above 5mbps as that's what I'm used to having here :D
