Do you wax your car (or have they waxed it). You can get problems like this when the windows have been waxed.

I have found that the only way forward with garages is to return the car for a full refund. I have had to do this when Polar Ford said that they don't deal with fluids and the windscreen washer fluid froze. Suddenly they did do fluids and fixed the problem. Sad though.

Nope it has not been waxed yet and I would never use a car wash. The car is washed by hand using proprietary car shampoos, but not these spray on types that is supposed to do it all in one, just normal car shampoo.

I am interested to know how you went about threatening to return the vehicle for a refund. It may just work, but I am not holding my breath.

If you've changed the wipers and the problem remains then it will be the windscreen that's the issue. Smearing as you described is normally caused by wax/polishes on the windscreen. You may not have waxed it but the dealer may not have PDI'd your car properly (pre delivery inspection where they remove all the wrapping/covers and coatings that protect the car during manufacturer and transit) or may have polished the caar/screen to make it look nice for you.

May I suggest you use a very old remedy which has worked for me in the past. Vinegar dabbed onto the windscreen with a soft cotton cloth but then removed using crumpled up newspaper. Clothes have a habit of smearing/moving around the contaminant on the windscreen whereas newspaper does not abosorb and is also more abrasive which is needed to shift those waxes. The suggest you wash your windscreen and paint edges with warm water to remove any traces of the vinegara and the smell. Don't use newspaper or tissues on your paintwork though - it'll scratch it to death.

With regard cleaning wipers, the KFC wipes are a AAA excellent suggestion - but don't use baby bum wipes as most have aloe vera and other mositurisers in them which will cause your wipers to be very greasy and spread the very same grease and gunk back all over your windscreen again - avoid.

Wife has a Megane, I'll ask her tonight if she's got a problem but don't think so. But Renault dealers are almost as bad as VW dealers. My wife had a rear brake squeal everytime she reversed (another 'renault design feature') and dealer told her it was a loose exhaust baffle (?) which they'd fixed for he - yet still squeeks. Since when does an exhaust affect a vehciles brakes only in reverse. Muppets.

  • Thanks for the advice Jason. I will certainly try your suggested cleaning routine, but the dealer has supposedly used a very special glass polish to ensure that there was nothing odd on the windscreen. However, the simple remedies usually are the best ones, so I will give it a go!

I bought a new shape Megane2 just over 3 years ago.
It was in the garage 4 times in a week in NOV 2006, the last week before the 3-year warranty ran out.
I sold it privately the date the warranty expired.
The buyer phoned me within a day to inform me that it was playing up.
I replied that it was sold as seen and to contact the dealer.

    Renault - Never ever again.

If it's anything like the Renault dealers I've had experience of, they are just telling you lies so that you go away. No good using a polish on the glass if it traps a contaminant beneath the polished layer and even if it was a specialised product it clearly ain't been done right.
