I only got into selling on eBay because of a friends mum who made an absolute killing selling wedding dresses on ebay.

She'd buy them from ebay.com and sell them on ebay.co.uk - sometimes her profits (after fees etc) were huge (£600+ on a dress) and sometimes not so (£60) but out of over 1000 transactions she said she could count on one hand the number of dresses that she sold at a loss.

I could never really understand buying (or at least paying hundreds for) a dress without trying it on etc... but folks do! and she never had anyone come round prior to bidding to try the dresses on.

This was a couple of years ago, so things mightve changed somewhat... but if her successes are anything to go buy, you might just net yourself a tidy sum!

Wedding dresses are hard to sell on ebay because even though the measurements, colour, material etc is all stated it is for the most important day of the persons life and if it is not tried on however well described and beautiful the picture is it may not suit the person and then what will they do?!! xxx

  • I've just put my wedding dress up for sale on http://www.sharethedream.net/about.php?language=en-gb

I can't really recommend it yet as it's only been on 2 days. But I found it when googling, so I assume other people will find it. And there seem to be quite a few dresses on the site too.

It costs £10 for 6 months. Compared to ebay (losing out on fees and baring in mind you can only post for 10 days) and other sites I found (some take comission on the sale of the dress) I thought this was quite good.

As for washing, I'm not suggesting you do it, as it is a risk. But we washed my dress in a normal washing machine at a dry cleaners. Mum sprayed some stuff on recommended by the laundrette people, and stuck it in a duvet inside the machine. It's come out completely fine. No beads lost. But of course it is a gamble....but for me it was worth it as I was getting quoted £100 and more for professional dry cleaning.

    Hi Everyone

Thanks for your comments it was exactly what I wanted to hear.

I saw dresses going for very little money and wondered if the time of year was the problem I'm going to think very hard about this one.

    Local Freeads.

We sold my wife's dress on there. IIRC it was bought for £250 (RRP £500) and we sold it for £150. We got the asking price for it.

Two brides to be came around to try it out. Apparently, one said that she thought it was very nice but didn't suit her. The other was very happy with it. She paid the wife cash on the spot.

I (husband) kept well out the way. It wasn't my place to be around women trying on wedding dresses.

Describe the dress in much detail as poss, adding and additional pics, measure everywhere, length, hips, waist, bust, arms, can the dress be altered in anyway - i.e let out or taken in?

You could advise, due to storage, it may require a dry clean prior to wearing it for the special day! That might save you cost and extra hassle! Like a previous poster said, why pay £70 ish to get it cleaned, if it only sells for £10-£20.

You could offer, viewing before bidding, but only through prior arrangment, and get your b/f or someone to be there. Take them in a room, where there are no valuables lying around! Inspect the dress before they try it on, and inspect it afterwards whilst they are still there (they might be slightly bigger than the size in ? and may tear a seam or something)

There are 4 people around me who I know who are getting married this yr (myself next year), weddings happen all year round so there is never a right/wrong time to list the dress, suppose it depends on style etc.

    Good luck,
