Thank you both for your replies.... the thought of putting a hard drive into a PC scares me to death! However, youtube is fantastic and no doubt there will be a video that will talk me through the process.

I will look ino changing over the hard drive

Are the PCs that you have been given too old to refurbish?

Are they branded models with a COA on the towers? Do you have the model numbers?

If it's just the price of a new HDD, then why not use one of them? Then you can put your old HDD into a caddy(or even a use as a secondary internal HDD if you are feeling chipper) and have access to your old data that way.

1 PC is home made with Athlon XP AMD sticker on it. The other is a Dell.

I think that the 'given' computers are really old as the fittings won't fit on my hard drive so I will have to use a caddy. I was going to buy one anyway so that I could use my old HDD as extra storage.
There are no hdds in either pc, will mine work outside the pc or will I have to find some where inside to secure it?
Where's the best place to buy a caddy and what do I look for? I have a gift cert for Amazon which could be used.

I have put in a request for a PC on freecycle so I will see if I get any response.

Thanks for taking the time to respond

you could try putting the disk in another machine, it might hang during boot at mup.sys, it might work
I have been working on this for the last hour+ and then discovered that the fittings are different! I never knew to check first, unfortunately.

Does your PC have a brand name and model number?

What is the model number of the DELL?

Can you identify the Motherboard designation of the Athlon XP AMD?

amThee are only 2 sorts of desktop 3.5" hard drives, IDE/PATA (older) or SATA (newer, last 5 years or so).
Google Images will show you which sort yours is-or give us the age and model of the PC.
Even better, if a Dell, post the Service Tag (7 digit ref on case sticker).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
