Hi my desktop has finally died and cannot be saved! I want to replace it with a laptop to get rid of the awful 'junk' around my PC desk. There is nothing worth saving except the £3.99 keyboard.

I want a big screen and 4gb RAM (or more)
I have an external HD so storage isnt too important.
I would like an i3 or above (I think)

It would have to be from a high street store as I don't have secure access now to pay for it.

Any suggestions please?

  • Can you give me an idea where you are based? There are a number of web sellers who allow cash on collection.

    Hi based in NW London

    I really don't know what I'm doing!

I have found a number of 17.3" laptops and wondered if someone would be willing to help me choose.

    Samsung RV711 500GB 17.3 Inch Laptop

    Dell Inspiron Q17R 17.3" Laptop

    ACER 7750G

    Toshiba C670-14P Laptop

I would really like the best value for money.
The Acer has far more features than I would ever use, but it seems to be the most future proof of them all.

I simply don't know how to choose!!

    TIA

Yes I think it was/is the PSU. The PC is 6 yrs old and has been failing for several weeks. A number of the thingies on the motherboard have 'blown' tops. Having said that, how would I know what PSU is needed?
Could I buy one from the high street. I don't have a secure computer to buy stuff from atm.

    Thanks for the reply

what do you mean by secure computer?

a psu with a rating in watts equal of higher to what you have already

you can buy anything from shops, but you pay more.

    capacitors - blown means?

Ah I was given a couple of PCs from freecycle and was hoping to use the PSU from one of them. However the plug that goes into the mother board is quite a different shape and won't fit.

Another thought was to take out my hard drive and put it into one of the PCs that I have been given. Both were given minus the hard drive. However, I have been told that it will be hard to get the PC to work using a ready loaded hard drive.

I have borrowed a laptop for a few hours that has little/no security on it, hence the unsecure pc.

Yes, I think they may well be called capacitors. One has 'domed' so much that it has cracked and appears to be rusty. It might be of no importance.

    thanks

Why not install some security on it? What little security does it currently have?
    Seems a bit odd.

Why don't you just buy a hard drive for one of the PCs that you have been given?

motherboard connectors are usually standard, 2 rows, but some may have more pin(hole)s.

you could try putting the disk in another machine, it might hang during boot at mup.sys, it might work

Thank you both for your replies.... the thought of putting a hard drive into a PC scares me to death! However, youtube is fantastic and no doubt there will be a video that will talk me through the process.

I will look ino changing over the hard drive

ATX PSU's are prety much generic, as long as the wattage rating is equal to or higher than the one you are replacing, it will fit and work.
All independent PC shops will sell you a PSU, prices start at about £20.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
