Lead Pipe Replacement Quote

Hey everyone,

Just received the quote from my local plumber for the replacement of a lead pipe from the house to the main. Can you pass your opinions on whether this is fair or too much? I was allocating less than half of this...oh dear!

30 meters of 25mm MDPE pipe, connections, all excavations and making good the ground. All materials and labour for this price - £1950 + vat (£2340).

The pipe is going to two taps so two connections at the house but thats it. The lead pipework in the house will be done under a separate job so not part of the quote.

Thanks in advance!

You can check here: http://www.pswatermains.co.uk/simple-guide-replacing-lead-pipes.htm , you may be entitled to a grant.

Why not just get another couple of quotes and then go for the one you are happy with.

Thanks for the reply - no grants in our area unfortunately :(

We now live quite remotely so not a lot of trades people around. The guy that quoted is one of two, the other being not so great apparently...so we want to go with him but not if he's ripping us off!

    Opinions welcome :)

And find out what's happening to the old pipework ;)

Just WHO is taking it to the scrapyard and weighing it in?

How many people and how long will it take? Are they hiring in equipment for that? eg little digger?

The lead is being left in the ground, just cut off at either connection so we could scrap it if we wanted. I tried to strike a deal about that but he wasn't interested, said more bother than it is worth!

You could either take the lead out yourself once he has dug up the trench and go and scrap it or you could cut it up and sell it as fishing weights,

Sounds absolutely extortionate to me. We paid £450 (inc VAT) to have a similar section of lead pipe replaced within the past 3 months.

Tip: you don't need a plumber you need a watermain replacement service/specialist. They will be LOADS cheaper.
  • HI I have the same problem as you which I have only just found out about. Someone had mentioned that an average cost you are looking at £40 per metre. I spoke with my plumber who has said his job is quite cheap as are materials it's the excavation that's more expensive.
