Mvved house and need to decide Talk Talk or NTL

Hello!

I think this is the right area for this so here goes!

I moved house and previously used Talk Talk option 3 with broadband and had no problems with them.

Now I've moved house and I decided intially to move Talk Talk and they said I need to confirm with BT in active line is there. I finally got through to BT who confirmed that a line is in place but it's not been used since 1999:eek: The BT eployeee said they would need to get in an engineer to check this and it may cost £124!

However, the previous owner had an NTL installation which is in place and I could simply use this connection but having read through all the bits and bobs NTL charges do seem higher.

What should I do? My funds are restricted at the mo' and I do need a landline and internet connection for work, so Iwould really appreciate any advice you can offer.

Thanks!!

  • We've been with TalkTalk for 2 years without any problem until Nov 06 when we moved to Talk3 Intl. Since then our service has been diabolical, and virtually non existant for the last 3 weeks. When it is on it's incredibly slow. It's very difficult to speak to a '2nd line technician' and I have been given wrong information which caused me to buy and change 3 routers in a week and then being told their wasn't anything wrong with the original one. For 3 days running they promised a technician would call me, and I'm still waiting. I even had 2 technicians in the US trying to fix the problem remotely. One told me my upload speed is 91 kilobytes, just a bit higher than dial-up. That info wasn't logged. I'm at my wits end with them and looking into changing ISP. A work colleague had exactly the same problem with them.

Unlike BT Talk Talk are not interested in moving customers. They require you to sign up with BT again and then you have to pay BT £18 to get out of the contract early. This £18 get out is stopping and BT will require you from May 07 to pay the full amount of the remaining contract plus an admin fee of £5.
  • Hi Wilson,

Get back in touch with TalkTalk and see what they say. ntl pricing is quite steep compared to non-cable providers, but I must say everyone I personally know have had no issues with their broadband.

You may also contact tiscali and the Post Office as they are also planning to launch telephone and broadband packages including line rental. Good luck.

But before you move your line rental to any other supplier(apart from Cable) you need a BT line to start with.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the advice. I've tried to discover if BT would not charge for a engineer to visit but I've had no joy! Does anyone know if it's possible.

Lokks like my cheapest options is to go with NTL/Virgin Media for now.
  • ive just negotiated a new deal with NTL as i was nearly leaving to take advantage of oranges broadband offer, im now paying £20/month for 2kb broadband, phone and the basic tv package, if you bare in mind that on most other broadband offers you still need to pay the BT line rental of £11.50 i think its a great deal and one you should be asking for.
    Titch :)
  • I would just get the BT line done - they only charge you if there is something wrong with the line. If you get a phone and plug it in you will know pretty much straight away if its okay - they will be a tone - not a dial tone, but a noise. If you get this tone, it 99% most likely is fine, and you won't need to pay the installation charge - this is only if something is wrong. If you go with ntl, you are pretty much stuck with them, and they just seem to get more and more expensive in comparison with other providers.
  • Dont know if your aware but (I received a flyer from NTL) for new customers NTL are offering 2mb of unlimited download for £10 per month for 1st year then £17.99 which is good but with this offer you may also want their phone at extra cost or try getting the line fm BT up as well and try NTL for a year just on broadband. This offer must be taken by 31st Jan 2007 though!

Stick with ntl. They have just merged with Virgin and are now known as "Virgin Media". You'll get a good opening offer as an existing customer for TV, phone & broadband.

Definately not worth paying £124 for BT installation.
