Is this a dodgy installation or a legitimate one?0

have you clicked open with?
cfg files and random file extensions often don't have an association, you may be able to open them in notepad if they are clear text.!!

Like Closed said, use 'open with' and choose notepad or something. A cfg file is usually a config file which is (normally) just text.0

pic 1 has open with, are you saying you do that and then get pic 2?!!

I don't have that choice.
I get pic 2 when I should get pic 3
And no it isn't a dodgy installation. Not everyone has a dodgy installation like you.
I don't have a dodgy installation however Windows 7 Ultimate is the version that is always put on computers without a genuine licence and I asked because Microsoft have been craftily screwing with the UI of dodgy Win 7 installs.
I asked civilly if it was and got abuse. I know the answer and how to resolve it but TBH you can shove it where the sun don't shine.0 -

I have exactly the same problem but I only have Windows 7 home and my problem happened after I used a reg cleaner.
But I am just living with it. Never again will I use a reg cleaner.
It is something to do with a missing registry entry in HKey_Classes_Root *OpenWithList I think, but as I don't have another computer to compare the registry with I can't find out what is missing.
You could try comparing these registry keys.0 -

Sorry, Take This but I had already come across that and tried it but it did not fix the problem.0 -
