I am looking to buy one console for my children. I am not sure which to buy. I like the idea of having them all playing together, but unsure which one to buy as there are so many hand held parts/games etc. Only helpful thoughts please......
I have been to a shop called 'game' to have a look...but I have no previous experience on these game things.

Xbox 360. The Wii is fun at first but quite quickly loses its appeal for other than fun to play once in a while party games. The PS3 is OK but costs more and seems to have more bugs in games when they're released than 360 versions of the same game. Also the PS3 controller is weaker than the 360. I've gone through four PS3 controllers and the kids, who are on more than I am, are on their original ones now 4 years old.
Also the online experience isn't as good - for example you can only chat to friends playing the same game unlike the 360 where it doesn't matter. In fact the 360 online voice chat is so good that many kids use that instead of mobile phones. Also when it comes to policing the online community, Microsoft are quite strict whereas there is basically none on Playstation Network.
Whilst the Xbox 360 really needs a XBox Live Gold subscription to get the best out of it which costs around £35 a year per account (but they do family subscriptions at £50 for four) it really is the best of them all.0 -
I think it depends on the age and sex of the children. How old & what sex are they?0

The Wii is fun for all the family, the XBOX 360 and PS3 are more hardcore games, shooters, etc.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

For a family console,i'd say get the Wii. My kids are 11 and 7 and we all love playing it.
I agree with Steve- the Xbox 360 and PS3 are more hardcore.0 -
I've not noticed any bugs with PS3 games, and I've not had any problems with the controllers.
I agree with the previous two posters - the Wii is very suited for families and children.0 -
Xbox and PS3 do have more 'hardcore' games, but both now have a large selection of family games as well.
The Wii is the cheapest and does have lots of fun 'active' games to play, the graphics aren't as good as though.
Out of the other two I would go for the PS3 - no subscription for online play, bulit in wifi, built in Blu-ray player, built in BBC iPlayer and ITVPlayer and 4OD! I think it is a better package all round.0 -
See what their friends have - my son has an xbox as do all his friends. One didnt, he had a PS3, so he sold it to Game and traded it in for an XBox, he lost out a bit but he wanted what his friends had.
I agree about the Wii, excellent for family games etc, but not something we use regularly.0 -

It doesn't play blu-rays.The Wii also has this.
I've tried watching BBC iPlayer on my PS3, the picture quality is terrible. I have no idea why, my TV is capable of displaying full HD, the PS3 is capable of outputting full HD images to the TV (and does quite happily when playing blu-rays or games that support full HD), and programs are available in HD on iPlayer. I don't know what part of the process is going wrong, but something is, the picture ends up really poor quality.
I watch iPayer etc via the Virgin Media box instead, that works properly in HD.0 -
I've got a Wii and a PS3 and my brother in the same house has an xbox.
Wii -If you're looking for a family console. (I play on it only a little nowadays, more when I have friends over for MarioKart. Also the iplayer on it is low quality compared to PS3 and PC versions).
Xbox - In my opinion a pure game console, but good at what it does. (You have to pay for online play)
PS3 - Game console and multimedia player. (I watch freeview through mine (accessory needed but cheap 2nd hand), and I think the iPlayer is fine. Also the extra cost is worth it if you don't already have a bluray player)"A bank* is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain."
(*Unless it's Santander. The branch says they sent you an umbrella 3 times already and don't understand why you don't have it yet and want it back right now!!!)0
