i think the the thing is buying a car is so expensive that unless lots of £500 jobs are going to need doing in next 18 months then buying a new one makes no real sense. plus would depend on how much you had to spend on a new car, if just a couple of grand you are not really going to get a much newer car that has had lots of miles doing who knows what!£18 for my old mobile.
new proper meal planning to cut spending.
£26 in coppers taken to bank.
£30 under grocery budget last 2 weeks.

Sadly, it seems the clutch needs repairing and the cost including labour will be around £520. Considering he is quite old and had to have repairs for his last MOT in June, we're seriously considering whether the cost this time will be worth it. The problem is, neither of us have ever bought or sold a car before (this was a kind gift from a family member) and so we have no clue what it might be worth. Have tried searching all over the internet but there doesn't appear to be any sort of comparison site or general guide to how much one can get for a specific car. So I'm hoping someone on here will know a bit more than me and be able to give some tips!
The car: Peugeot 406 Estate, 2001 (Y) registration
Conditon: Needs new clutch to be properly driveable (can go a few miles), some damage from an accident last year (dented bonnet, broken fog light, scratches), has driven fine until yesterday.
Cost to repair: £520
Questions:
- any idea how much/if we could sell it for?
- any idea what we could get if we scrapped it?
- could we get part exchange on it? If so, how much?
Please help! I'm so confused by all of this!0 -

It's really strange that everyone on here is saying to pay up. Everyone we know personally has been saying scrap or sell it and get a new one! I always thought if the cost of repairs was more than the car was worth, you were better off selling it?
Old cars have a lot of problems, if you have money saved and want to get a better car then there's no harm in that. I would avoid a car for a few thousand though as you'll likely be encountering other problems a few mmonths down the line.
A replacement car always costs money so you wont get many on here recommend it given its a moneysavers sitematched betting: £879.63

Thanks for all the advice folks. my OH cunningly remembered that our breakdown cover includes collecting it from home, so we used that to get it to a better priced garage. Probably won't last for much longer but at least this gives us a chance to hunt down a new car we actually want for a decent price, rather than rushing things.
