Sell, scrap or repair?

Our much-loved car starting making funny noises and giving off smells yesterday, resulting in a swift visit to the garage for him. Sadly, it seems the clutch needs repairing and the cost including labour will be around £520. Considering he is quite old and had to have repairs for his last MOT in June, we're seriously considering whether the cost this time will be worth it. The problem is, neither of us have ever bought or sold a car before (this was a kind gift from a family member) and so we have no clue what it might be worth. Have tried searching all over the internet but there doesn't appear to be any sort of comparison site or general guide to how much one can get for a specific car. So I'm hoping someone on here will know a bit more than me and be able to give some tips!
The car: Peugeot 406 Estate, 2001 (Y) registration
Conditon: Needs new clutch to be properly driveable (can go a few miles), some damage from an accident last year (dented bonnet, broken fog light, scratches), has driven fine until yesterday.
Cost to repair: £520
Questions:
- any idea how much/if we could sell it for?
- any idea what we could get if we scrapped it?
- could we get part exchange on it? If so, how much?
Please help! I'm so confused by all of this!

£520 seems a bit steep for the clutch, the one on my 406 was £400 a couple of years ago and I felt a bit ripped off at that as it was at a major chain and I had very little choice as it had failed completely.
Value really depends on petrol or diesel, petrol scrap value (£150?) diesel £600?0 -
It's petrol, sadly. And we don't have much choice on the garage either, as it won't go very far, so we have to go local.0

£520 and you have a clutch that will last 100,000 miles. Plus whatever you fixed already.
You could spend £3000 on a newer car and need a new clutch next year.
Plenty of price check sites, Auto trader, Ebay, Parkers, What Car etc.
But dont think the advertised price is what its worth. Its the actual sale price.
If yoo brought it to me and it needed a new clutch i would be thinking £300 for it.
But it depends on the condition and what paperwork you have for work done.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Our thinking was that the clutch might be ok but something else would probably go next. It needed quite a bit of work to pass the mot this year so things are starting to go.
I know there are sites to buy cars but I couldn't find any price check sites for what I'd get scrap or selling secondhand.
Good thing is we do have a full history, as the only previous owner was my partner's dad and we have all the paperwork for work done.0 -
One more vote for replacing the clutch (you should be able negotiate this a bit), better the devil you know...0

We're in Hertfordshire. Everything's expensive down south!
It's really strange that everyone on here is saying to pay up. Everyone we know personally has been saying scrap or sell it and get a new one! I always thought if the cost of repairs was more than the car was worth, you were better off selling it?0 -
for the price of the clutch youd have a car on the road for at least the length of the MOT allowing you to save up to replace it..
i would get the clutch done.. sign up to the Peugoet owners club they would reccomend a decent cheap fitter..Sealed pot challenger # 10

Luckily, we wouldn't really need to save up to replace it, as we have savings in the bank. Does no-one else think it's likely something else will go wrong? Since it's needed repairs twice this year so far (to pass MOT and now clutch)?
Unfortunately, don't think we'd be able to get it to another garage. It's barely driveable at the moment and the next nearest garage is quite a way, so not sure the Peugeot owners club would be able to help.
I'm so confused now because we pretty much decided last night to get a new car and now I've come on here and everyone thinks we should keep the old boy going.0
