Donating 79p...

Hey all
Warning: I haven't been very MSE this week as it's not been a good one and I've been lazy!
Tuesday night I went to the fish and chip shop (yes I know) and I must have put my purse down somewhere when I came back, because when I went to get it the next day at work to buy lunch at Tesco (yes I know), it wasn't there!
I wasn't too worried as I knew it would be at home, but I was hungry and my boss kindly offered to lend me some cash (I didn't ask).
She only had notes so she gave me a tenner and I thanked her, saying I wouldn't be able to pay her back until Friday cos I was going to be a dirty stopout until then.
She asked me to get her some tea bags from Tesco which cost 79p*.
Now, would it be tight of me to only return £9.21 to her??
I've thought about it, and I might look tight, but if I give her the whole tenner back I might as well have borrowed the cash from the bank - they'd probably have given me a more attractive rate!!!
I think I have always intended to give her the £9.21 back but was interested in hearing what you all thought.
Suze
* she did this because I have converted her: she used to buy cups of tea at 40p a time from the canteen until I pointed out that it was cheaper to buy tea bags and milk and use the free hot water from the boiler in the kitchen!

Personally, I'd give the full amount back, afterall she did help out. Is she likely to offer the 79p for the tea bags when you give her the cash back?
Or, you could pretend you forgot to get cash out, & count it all out in change - making sure there is of course 79p in change!I am in the future you know......9 hours ahead to be exact !:D0 -
Well if you REALLY don't want to have given her 79p for lending you money..... why not try giving her the £10 note and say "oh and here's the receipt for the (79p) teabags" in a way that makes it clear you are giving her a receipt as proof for the amount you wish to be reinbursed with. Then it looks like you are returning the tenner she lent you and just want a refund for the tea bags.
Personally for 79p and the potential atmosphere it may cause, i'd let 79p go....0 -
Ermmm she lent you a tenner out of the kindess of here heart~I'd write the 79 p off personally just to avoid an uncomfortable atmosphereNew Year~New Start!!
Getting on back on the moneysaving wagon in 2009!
January grocery challenge~ £400 Spent £49.55
£100 clothes for a year~Spent £00 -
I feel really tight now! LOL!
She might have done it out of the kindness of her heart but it's not like she gave it to me - she lent it, so she's getting it back...
THIS is why I hate borrowing (and lending) money!!!

I honestly cannot believe you are asking that.A banker is a fellow who lends you his umbrella when the sun is shining and wants it back the minute it begins to rain.0 -
OK, point taken!!!
When all's said and done, I am being tight and I shouldn't begrudge her the 79p.
8% though... :P
Am I officially the tightest person on these boards?

I would give her the tenner back as a way of a thank you for being so generous. 79p isn't going to break the banks really is it.:)0

I don't want to offend but i think it would be really tight fisted not to give the full £10 back. If your boss hadn't been kind enough to lend you the money you would have gone hungry.

True. I spose I'm thinking about it from the point of view of I wouldn't dream of asking someone to get me something from the shop and then not give them the money for it.
I'm embarrassed for asking the question now!
