If you have a standard UK passport, then you need to go to the ESTA website and fill in the form, pay the approx 14 dollar fee and get the ESTA authorisation number.
Print it off to show them when they say you haven't got one!!

ESTA only applies to entry to the USA by air or sea. If you are driving across the border you don't need to apply for ESTA, you will be asked alot of questions, there may be a form to fill in (sorry, can't quite remember) and a fee of $9(US) per person to pay.
(If you have flown into the USA at the start of your visit and then crossed into Canada and then driven back into the USA there is no fee or form at the border.)[/CENTER]Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -
I stand corrected:
If you're travelling to the US by land, say from Canada or Mexico, you don't need ESTA. It's only necessary for travel by air or sea.
I've always had the ESTA in place for flights from Canada to the US, and assumed it was used for when I used land crossings too.
Curious regulations!!

No need for an ESTA if you are crossing by land. (But you would still need a visa if you are ineligible for visa free travel.) Just turn up at the border and show your passport. They will give you a form to fill in, stamp your passport and charge you a fee (was $6 last time I crossed the border by land: but seems that it has gone up).
Aren't we jolly nice letting US citizens into the UK for free whether they enter by air, land or sea?

If any Americans arrive by land we're in real trouble....0

It does take a while to get to USA from Canada they searched our car and nicked our fruit we were going to eat that day instead of eating at fast food restaurants. Getting back into Canada was easy peasy though the immigration officer only asked me questions of what was happening in Corrie LOL! don't you just love Canadians eh?:j Trytryagain FLYLADY - SAYE £700 each month Premium Bonds £713 Mortgage Was £100,000@20/6/08 now zilch 21/4/15:beer: WTL - 52 (I'll do it 4 MUM)0
