Can the rest of us South of the border vote on the break up of the Union too, the quicker we get rid the better.
I think England should get a referendum the day before they do theirs. They can have Wales as 2 for 1 offer as well.

I think you guys must be forgetting that there must be some reason that Westminster wants to keep the Union.

Wouldn't be something akin to Scotland providing something like 11% of the revenue, whilst only getting 9% of the expenditure.

Scotland in other words are producing more revenue than they spend.

Are you including the oil revenues, which everyone knows are rightfully English?

Yes. We should stick to much more important issues like what your house is currently worth and how much equity you have.
    :D

Where do you stand on the position of Scottish independence Geneer?

Salmond has some excellent ideas on Scotland's economy. I mean, look at whom he is using for a basis of comparison.

Thats pretty classic stuff. I can't believe he can still open his mouth without people throwing things at him.

I'm not sure anyone understands the expenditure and receipt figures. People seem to adjust them to say what they want them to say.

I do know that apparently 60% of Scotland's economy is comprised of the public sector.

If you can keep that going post independence, as well as offering free 4 year degrees, free prescription charges, free parking in hospitals, absorb your share of the bank bailouts and national debt, pay EU subs, run overseas embassies, continue to outspend England per capita on benefits, attracting tourism, recruit an army navy and a police force and still have an extra 2% a year to put away for a rainy day; I might consider moving up there.

I dont think Scotland will be a failure as an independent nation nor so I wish you any bad luck in becoming one, but its clearly going to be a very different one economically and Scots need to prepare for that.

Most of your part in bold refers to expenditure, but if expenditure is less than revenue.........

Googling the level of subsidy brought up this (not exactly up-to-date):
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_formula) the actual per capita expenditure for 2006/7 was England £7,121, Wales £8,139, Scotland £8,623 and Northern Ireland £9,385.

Scotland subsidizes the UK. Scotland's population makes up 8.6% of the UK yet raises 10.41% of ALL UK Tax revenue
Scotland is one of the few regions of the United kingdom who earns as much revenue as it spends.

Reason for GDP different is that 20% of the UK is employed in the public sector (note whole UK). When 33% of Scotland is employed in the public sector.

If you took that away from Scotland, it would be a barren wasteland not dissimilar to the Ireland during the potato famine.

    Mr Smarmond knows this.

Wikipedia, that great source. Ok well if it says it in Wiki it must be true. Its not just about money, though is it. Does your link take into account the money Scotland saves by not having to set up and maintain its own military, deal with diplomatic matters, currency, or even the net impact of shifting UK government jobs eg London Tax offices for instance over the border etc etc

The SNP and its ilk like moan a lot, like to suggest Scotland would be better off without the rest of us, so I say good luck to them, See ya, and as they obviously hate the rest of the UK so much I assume they will stay North or the border and leave the rest of us to it...
