Potatoes - where to start? (Merged Thread)

  • I have just had 2.5 pounds of potatoes from my plants in the last few days. They are growing in one of those plastic type bags specifically for growing potatoes in(like a small dustbin)
However as i have been rooting through the bag which is extremely difficult, i have come across tiny potatoes about 5mm across which obvioulsy have not grown properly yet.
The pots i have harvested mostly have been the size of new potatoes like you get from the supermarket, very yummy indeed. There are flowers on the plants but the leaves are all now wilting, presumably because i have been moving all the roots to get at the potatoes.
I have covered over the little tiny pots with dirt.
    My question is...........
Will they grow on, and what about any potatoes that i have not yet harvested, i only got about half way down the bag, will they just get bigger and bigger, or should i just empty the bag fore the rest(if any left) and throw the plants away?????????

if the plants dead i'd get them out also depends on if the roots supplying the tiny pots got damaged when you rooted around lol, i would tip them all out and get another pot in to start again see if you can get another batch going!

Dug up and ate our Chrismas spuds yesterday! Planted them last summer, they finally came up around Easter and still tasted delicious midsummer's day!:rotfl: :rotfl:

My tip and it works :D

If a potato is sprouting then why not plant it and let other new pots grow from it instead of chucking them in the bin? :D

I got an old tyre minus the centre of course from the local garage for nothing, they were glad to get rid of it. I put it in the garden and put soil in the middle until half full, then I put the old potatos that were sprouting into the soil and covered them up with more soil. You will be amazed how many new pots you can get from doing that, and it's so easy to do :D

DS planted a sprouting potatoe. It got carried away growing and we could not keep covering it so we go a growbag. Opened it on the end. Rolled down the sack until the smallest size the already growing potatoes would fit in. Each week we have unrolled the bag a bit and added the compost removed from the bag. It is now flowering! I will let you know what the crop is like soon!
