Orange Broadband - Netgear router NOT UP TO THE JOB! replacement?

Hi folks
looking for a bit of advice - our new Orange router is just not pumping out enough signal to get round our largish house. The old BT Home Hub was significantly better (in the same location).
I spoke to Orange who were actually quite helpful. Tried all sorts of channels, settings - with perhaps marginal improvement, but still inadequate.
Currently in talks with them about getting some compensation to put towards a new, more powerful router - but I need to give them a price.
So what I need to know is: does anyone have any good recommendations for good quality, reliable, more powerful routers which deliver a stronger signal than a bog-standard Netgear DGN1000?
Many thanks,
Ash

Orange do not need to give you any 'compensation' because your property isn't suitable for their standard router.
Personally, if you've already tried different channels and router positions, then I'd go for Powerline networking instead. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
They've already agreed to help with the cost of a new router, as a goodwill gesture. I just need a recommendation of a good wireless router - the old BT Home Hub did the job fine....0

The older HomeHub (version 1, possibly the 1.5) can I think be firmware flashed to use with any ISP.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

OK thanks for the info - will investigate!
IN the meantime, any other router recommendations welcome.0 -
My Orange router recently developed a fault and I have to say Orange has been excellent. I mailed them yesterday, they phoned today and a new router is on its way. The old one is a Siemens Gigaset and the new one is a Netgear but I don't know which model. I have in fact been warned off Netgear (see reviews on Amazon) but the problem seems to be with wireless connections - which mine isn't.
If you are wireless it could be that they recognise there is a known problem anyway.0
