Palna, your English is awful. If you post in the same way as you write a letter then it's no surprise you haven't been offered a job.

Had a bad time with agencies over my recent period of unemployment. I have the distinct impression that "recruitment consultants" have a target number of people to get on the agency books every week - of course they'll bend over backwards to sign you up and put you through the tests as their livelihood, bonuses, and continued employment depends on it. But once you're registered and on the books it's a different story... I felt like tearing my hair out after a few months of fobbing-off and empty reassuring words with precious little actual work to show for it. If I was THAT good and promising a candidate and had such strong skills, as they kept telling me, how come there was nothing there?

Don't rey on them - kee plugging away with direct applications to employers and seek to cut out the middleman, some of whom are frankly as useful as the proverbial chocolate teapot.

Good luck - you're not "lazy" or "idle", just unemployed. It's only people who've never felt what it's like to be out of work and on the dole and scratching to make ends meet who will acuse you of laziness and tell you its's your own fault.Blame it on the bloody bankers, it's their recession!

A lot of these agencies do put in regular job adverts to the Directgov website. How I used to handle this was if I saw one of those which I was possibly suitable for I'd ring them then. Quite often I did get a call back later in the week about other roles. If I hadn't called them in 2 weeks then I'd call them anyway.

Its a pain but its worth doing. In some fields (Finance/Accounts in particular) around 70% of roles are only ever advertised through agencies. Around here Manufacturing roles are even more likely to be agency advertised.

I don't want to jump on the bandwagon but Palna: I would see if the jobcentre or your local college can put on you on an English course. It may just be a typing thing (or even that your standards for this forum are lower than the standards you use for applications) but your written English does come across as bad and needing some work. Apologies for mentioning it.

I had the agencies say the same thing.

1 - I called on a weekly basis and they then got annoyed at me keep 'pestering' as they were 'busy' and then asked me NOT to call weekly!

2 - They NEVER call when a suitable job comes in.

3 - Calling every agency weekly, costs quite a bit in phonecalls to get fobbed off each time.

I would however at very least email them weekly or even fortnightly just to remind them that you are still looking. I would also agree that you do need to brush up on your grammar, full stops and capital letters are very important especially if you are applying for anything.
  • I`ve worked for a couple of agencies in the past and what you need to do is play them at their own game. The consultants will sign practically anbody up to their agency as long as they have a national insurance number, they have figures to hit and for all I know get a bonus per person on their books. They will tell you anything to get you to sign up, most of the jobs in their windows don`t exist!

Sign up with loads of agencies, some are better than others. The one`s that treat you the best are the one`s that you need to work for when they offer you work. This guy sounds like somebody who is messing you around

I have applications galore and potential interviews lined up, for one i would never tell the agency i have interviews lined up and have called the few i am on daily to give them a push in getting me a job.
  • Don't just call every day. Call every day and be pleasant. Ask the member of staff how they are, how their evening went. Tell them a little about yourself (make stuff up if necessary - 'Sorry if I seem a bit distracted today - my new kitten is playing with my feet') - pleasant chatty stuff, that will make them remember you as a human being.
