Missing Drivers, Unable to Connect to Internet

Hoping for some techie help...

Briefly - my son has "donated" his old pc to my DH. Prior to it making the long journey from his room to ours he moved all his files off old HDD onto his new pc. Old pc had always worked fine and connected to internet.

Have just turned old pc on to find cannot connect to internet. In Device Manager both "Other PCI Bridge Device" and "SM Bus Controller" have yellow question marks next to them and appear to have no drivers installed.

Have done a little bit of research and believe these could be motherboard drivers? The pc was built for him by a friend and as far as I know we do not have a disk for the motherboard and as it is quite old I can't seem to find anywhere to dl the drivers from.

The mb manufacturer is Gigabyte Technology and the model is C51-MCP51. (Not sure if anymore info is required but have used Speccy so can give more if needbe)

Is this likely to be causing the connection problems and if so can anyone help me to locate the drivers?

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Incidentally...in Network Connections it is set to connect using "1394 Net Adapter" - is this something that he has changed to transfer the files or is that what it is supposed to be?

How are you trying to connect to the internet?
    dial up modem
    Broadband with an external modem
    wirelessly
RJ45 cable into a network card and then into a router?

Not sure what an RJ45 cable is but using a broadband connection wired into router.

    Yes, XP SP3 is installed.

    :)

The Motherboard designation should begin with GA-...

Take a look for that string.

Please bear with me but I'm not really sure what that means :o

I have looked on the Gigabyte site and you're right - all the available dl's start with "GA -" but the only info I can find on the PC gives the model as C51-MCP51 and nothing comes up when I search for it on the site.

Should I be looking for something else?

RJ45 is an ethernet cable which is what you're using to connect to the router. In Device Manager, does it have anything under network adapters? and on the network card where it's plugged in, does it have two little LED's? and if so, are they flashing?

The only suggestion I have is to go on your son’s comp and try to download drivers for the old comp, put them on a disc or memory stick and take them to old comp. I think you‘ll need make and serial numbers of comp and motherboard etc.

In Device Manager under network adapters it shows "1394 Net Adapter".

Where the ethernet cable is plugged into the pc it is lit up and one little orange led light is flashing intermittently. All the router lights are on too and I'm having no probs accessing internet on my pc plugged into same router. (I know you didn't ask all that but hoping it might be helpful! :D)

Yes, the GA- designation. otherwise we will just be guessing at the Drivers.

But if you don't mind me guessing, then I guess that this is what you need. ;)
