I hope the first two posters realise that if the other side's insurance companies take the opinion that the car hire charges are too high and don't pay up, YOU will be responsible for paying the hire charges.

This is frankly an appalling state of affairs and one of the reasons why car insurance payments are so high.

Enjoy these posh motors whilst you can - but I wouldn't like to be paying your insurance renewal premiums when they come around.

Damage to the car is substantial, probably in the region of £2k-£2.5k at a minimum. Checking the various car guides the car is probably worth around £3.5k in a private sale.

Not sure where you get £3500 from, according to Parkers a 9 year old Audi A4 2L 4 dr is worth £2250 in a private sale, top franchised dealer price is only £2500, which model is yours.

    Ahhh- thank you mummyof5, I missed that.:o:o:o

    Thanks for the info.

As it happens I've spent the last while on the phone to both the claim management company (CMC) and my own insurers. My insurers stated the claim was passed to the CMC for both hire and repair. The CMC today stated that they were only doing the hire. After bouncing back and forth between the two companies, over several phone calls, my insurers have finally acknowledged that the CMC have rejected the repair part of the process and returned it to my insurers for action as it is a potential write-off case! The e-mail from the CMC to my insurers was sent yesterday but no-one at my insurers had done anything about it. The case has now been re-opened by my insurers.

Apparently my insurers are now going to appoint a garage/salvage company to come and collect my car to take away for assessment - sometime in the next 5 days. After that, who knows what will happen.

Had I not taken the time to chase these people up who knows how long it would have been until someone realised that the CMC had referred the case back to my insurers? It doesn't fill me with confidence.

As stated earlier, my own 'guesstimate' for repairs is over £2k on a car worth £3.5k - so it will be a close call I suspect.

cajef - It's an Audi A4 TDi SE (130PS), on a 51 plate, with only 63k on the clock.

poppasmurf - no, the courtesy car comes with an indemnity policy that covers me if the other side refuse to pay. This is provided free of cost subject to my co-operation with the claim, i.e. provision of statements, Court appearances if necessary etc.

Ah, OK your estimate for that model/mileage does appear to be about right.:)

No worries mate - thanks for taking the time to read/reply. Much appreciated.
  • Your case sounds virtually the same as mine , being bounced between the 2 companies etc. I pay my insurance and therefore have no qualms being given a nice courtesy car to drive , especially as the accident was not my fault. That's why I pay for comprehensive insurance , poppasmurf.

This is one of the big reasons for dealing direct with the third party insurance, they sort the hire car out in the first place,
often having contracts with some particular hire car company
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I totally agree. It's much more easier and straight forward to claim from the TP if they are 100% at fault. Our Insurers tried to pass us on to one of those "ambulance chaser" type companies. Thank god I googled them is all I can say. The claim and settlement took 2.5 wks going through the TP Insurers...I hear some CMC can take months and months!!!

Normally the third party refuse to pay, you have to make statements you need the car, provide bank statements, proof of earnings, etc, get a court date, then there is an agreement reached out of court a week beforehand for the cost of a reasonable equivalent courtesy car.
  • The actual cost of repairing my motor was around 80/85% of what they might claim was their market valuation, which I would have challenged, but I did not take the Michael and get some grubby claims handling company to bloat the bill with fictional car hire charges. I hired a car myself for a week and then they took over the hire. They paid without question, never involving my insurers at all.

If someone hired a £120 a day car I'd deliberately go out of my way to screw with them so bad they'd have to pay for it themselves.
