It is an operating system. Currently your iPhone 4 will be running iOS4.x
On October 12th, iOS5 will be available to download from iTunes following the normal upgrade procedure. It will add a bunch of cool new features.0 -

Also make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your machine. Should be 10.4.10
