Probably a dumb question but can these overheard average speed cameras read your number plate in the dark?

    YES, otherwise it would be pointless having them in place.

    Mine does, but they point forward to illuminate the way ahead, not to light up the front number plate....

    Number plates are reflective they reflect infra-red as well as normal light!

    Only way to check for sure is drive at about 20mph above the speed limit between some cameras after dark and see if you get a ticket.

    Then you will have your answer - all verified by yourself.

    Would have thought the glare from the cars headlights would prevent the camera from taking the plate number but that is only my opinion

    yes they DO!
    we have them at work on the gate.
    They read the number plate in the dark and rain with headlights on so the barrier can open
    Spending my time reading how to fix PC's,instead of looking at Facebook.
