Cats!

It's unlikely to be a cat if the poo is in on paths/out in the open - far more likely to be a small dog or fox.
Not true, i regularly see cats having a dump next to the curb near my mums house.:oGetting married 23rd June 2012!!:o0 -

My mum's neighbour swears by mothballs. Just place them at intervals around your borders - apparently cats cannot stand the smell...
Can't vouch for that myself though - if ever one of my neighbours' cats decides to make a "donation" to my garden or stake out my bird table, my trusty dog Jasper will pop out to have a discreet word with them...
Unfortunately, that often has the effect of making them do it even more when he is out at work with me all day, just to annoy him. I'd be tempted to go with the water-pistol idea though...
Good luck! x0 -
they stood on a poo on my path
I would be surprised to find that this was left by a cat,
Normally cats will only go somewhere soft where instinct tells them that it can be covered over, although many cats don't bother with the covering over part of the job.
You might well find that what was left on your path was deposited by a fox. (speaking from experience here as my garden gets visited by foxes every night.0 -
I also would go to the council/RSPCA. I just think "If I had 17 cats how would I stop them using next door's garden as a toilet?" I'm not sure how there is a simple answer to that. Normally I'd suggest speaking to your neighbour first over any difficulties but if she had any practical solutions she'd already be doing them.
I also agree with the other suggestion of spending a week at home with a water pistol to train the cats. It wont harm them. If you're in the house keep checking out of the windows, if you see a cat, bang on the window - no doubt it will stop and glare at you and not move :rotfl: so then open the door and run out with the water pistol and shoo it away.
The key to this is consistency, if you try it once and then do it again a couple of days later it wont achieve anything.0 -
Poor you, it sounds horrible
I've got two cats but they're predominantly indoor (only go out in the garden when we're out there). They use litter trays but the neighbour's cat poops in our garden if she can get away with it. We've found putting wee-soaked litter, from our fellas' litter trays, in the flower beds helps keep her away. Not pleasant maybe but better than surprise poos I think.
I wish our cats would spray in our garden just to mark their territory but they're far too spoilt to 'go' outside. I did catch one of them weeing in a big sack of compost once though :rotfl:
I'd suggest Environmental Health too - 17 cats pooing in your garden when you've got kids is not on at all."Don't sacrifice what you want most for what you want now"

Wow, thank you for all the replies.
She has 9 kittens from 4 different litters and 8 adult cats. I've tried the RSPCA but she refuses to answer the door to them so they've done nothing. Environmental Health refuse to get involved and say that they have no powers to stop her having as many cats as she would like. I've tried the sonic aids but that didn't work either and their is no talking to the owner (i've tried) although leaving it on her doorstep is tempting. The poo has worms and maggots in them quite often. Ewwwww!
I have four young children who I have armed with water pistols. The cats stay out of my garden during the day, it's at night which is the problem. They all line my fence at night.
I've not heard about the fox oil or mothballs so will try those. Thank you both.
It was definitely cat poo on the path. I used to live near the countryside so I know fox poo. This was the too pale, not smelly and full of undigested cat food (Their food is all kept indoors). They even manage to poo on the door steps and on my kitchen floor when I left the door open in the summer! My gates are locked so I doubt it was a dog.0 -
I have 5 cats, who all go to the loo in our numerous cat litters or in the fields surrounding our house. But I would have to agree with everyone else that 17 cats is hugely excessive and can understand your frustration.
If the poo has worms in it, then it would suggest that the cats are not being cared for properly - have you tried Cats' Protection? This is evidence of potential mistreatment. It seems to me that this problem needs to be sorted out for the welfare of all concerned - obviously you and your family, but also the cats themselves :eek:0 -
It does need to sorted out for everbodies sake but I can't find anybody who will help. Some of the cats are in a poor condition with sores and fur missing. This is why I called the RSPCA. It isn't fair on the cats either. They just roam the local area and have kittens after kittens. The lady who owns them gets rid of a couple and keeps the rest.
I expect to have the odd poo or two but I can fill a carier bag every week and as the bins are only emptied fortnightly, I have to leave the carried bag near the bin until it bin day or my bin is swarming with flies.
I love cats too which is one of the reasons i'm so bothered, it's horrible.0
