uninstalling the wifi card won't delete the drivers....if you restore the router to factory settings ensure you know the default SSID and wifi password

Well I've uninstalled the wifi card.

Haven't reinstalled it yet though as it's 'vanished'.

Also there appears to be no option to 'restore default settings' for the router.

of course it's vanished, you've uninstalled it !! Once uninstalled, you have to reboot the lappy in order for windows to re-discover and install it for you :)

Router reset to factory settings are usually achieved by pushing the small recessed button on the rear of the unit with a paperclip in through the hole to the button....

    Ok. Done.

BUT, unfortunately both reinstalling the wireless card and resetting the router haven't worked.

Yeah, I've also tried the usual stuff - turning router off - reset network adaptor - get new ip settings etc.
Even some stuff from tech forums like 'disabling Bonjour'.

I'm fast running out of options.

how about....open a command prompt as admin, and try

    'netsh winsock reset catalog/ '

(without the quotes, and with the space after the / )and enter...you may need to reboot after this.
