Wirelesc connection problems - Unidentified Network

Hola. I've just recently moved to a new place with the internet already set-up and I can't connect to it via the wireless router. I typed the correct password in and it showed (and still shows) up as 'connected' when I look at the 'connect to a network' box.
The problem is that I can't access the internet and it displays 'unidentified network - local only'.
I'm sure it's a problem with my laptop as when a friend came around he was able to connect to the wireless via his internet phone without any problems.
I can access the internet through the ethernet cable (which I am currently doing). When I check the 'network and sharing center' it shows 'multiple networks' -
Network: the one I'm connected to via the ethernet cable presumably.
Unidentified Network - the wireless I can't access properly.
I've done the usual searching of the tech forums and also the thread on this forum back in May which didn't come to any conclusions after only 4 posts.
I'm running Vista.
Any ideas as what to try?

Can you not be connected by cable and then set up a wireless connection, shut down, remove cable and reboot. That's what I did last week as my little icon was showing "Local Only" and Virgin advised to do it this way and it worked. No harm in trying.0

it's a known PITA in vista....delete the saved wifi network from Manage Network Connections, then create a fresh one to the correct router

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

when you search for wireless networks, are you seeing the SSID belonging to your router ??......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

you could try uninstalling the wifi card, rebooting the lappy and letting windows re-install it......wouldn't be the first time this has worked

Is the wireless dongle compatible with the router?Truth always poses doubts & questions. Only lies are 100% believable, because they don't need to justify reality. - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Labyrinth of the Spirits0

Service Provider ? and router type..0

Hmmm.
I don't have a wireless dongle, I have a lap-top and the wireless function is built-in.
Never had a problem before and I estimate that I've probably connected to at least 20 different wi-fi set ups in the past.
Router is Scientific Atlanta (CISCO) EPR2320R2. Provider is ONO.
I can access the router config and it's all in English. Perhaps I could try restoring default settings - as the previous occupants could have changed some settings...........
If I try un-installing the wifi-card, will it still be on my lap-top to re-install? As I don't have any 'back-up discs'.
Looks like several days of trial and error may be ahead.
