That's a variable rate tariff. For a few pounds more I'd go with a fixed rate tariff. When I put your usage details in to the calculator I get a £257 saving. Scottish Power's OES16 11p per unit of Electricity and 3.5p per unit of Gas after taking into account standing charges and discounts. Which region are you in?

You are paying 13.5p and 4.4p currently so would be saving quite a bit. A 20% saving is very good.

Your 1 month direct debit refund is in the calculated saving. £167 times 12 is £2004 less what you used at £1783 leaves them to send you a cheque of £167 and still have £54 in the account for future increases in use or tariff.

We are in West Yorkshire with a HD3 postcode

    Hi

yes it is well insulated heating goes off start of march till end of oct ish
so no gas used and no standing charge :j
water heated by 40 tube solar panel.

low energy bulbs and equipment so low usage.
having said that im in all day and tv on all the time
in winter i put heating on the lowest setting in all the house except 3 of the bedrooms the stats on the rads are set to number 1

i now have 3.92kwh solar panels fitted this summer so my usage will be less this next year.

Are those the big roof panels.? I am currently thinking about solar panels to try and reduce electricity costs.

Well done. I'm always pleased to hear of people escaping from disgraceful "deferred discount" tariffs.

A brief tariff "tutorial". OES16 is a "guaranteed discount" tariff offering a minimum of 11.9% off the Scottish Power standard tariff until 31/12/2012. (If only you had switched last week you could have had over 16% discount on OES15:(). I don't say that to make you feel bad but to highlight the advantages of continual awareness of tariff options.

OK, the unit price can increase (up to the "guarantee") but you must receive notice of that. At that point you are entitled to "reject" the increase with Scottish Power and immediately initiate a switch. If you do that will not be liable to pay the early termination charges, nor the tariff increase pending the transfer.

Note the "stick" Scottish Power is currently receiving in this Forum for "fraudulent" application of early termination charges. With luck that issue will have been severely dealt with before you experience a tariff increase:D.

We have just had a letter from Atlantic saying that based on last year's usage of gas and electricity we will be paying £726 per annum (5367.95 kWh) for electricity and £1057 (23973.03kWh)for gas.
We have a four bedroomed house 4 adults. Just wondered how this compares with other people's consumption.

    katsclaws

    Thats a bit over-precise isn't iit? They don't charge to the nearest 100th of a kWh. :D

Anyway, for the last 12 months ours were 5003 kWh electricity and 16238 kWh gas. 4 bedroom house. 2 adults most of the time. 3 some of the time, and occasionally 4.

I've gotten one from ebay, and plumbed it in myself. Not very hard.
    Total cost ~500.

Very similar to this (no experience of seller).

I had electric only water heating, but the cylinder had a coil for connecting to a central heating system.
So, all it was was remove a couple of tiles, place proper pipework through them and fitments, replace the tiles with aluminium sheet properly bent, add a small DC pump (5 watts), and fill it up with antifreeze.
You do need to be completely happy with plumbing, and the consequences of oopses if things go wrong.
After several dull days in succession, with drawing off water, the temperature stabilises at around 25.
However, most days since June it's been dumping heat due to being too hot.
