Tracked down by Life Insurance Co.

My wife’s father died around six years ago, he had a serious drink problem leading up to his death which ultimately killed him. Recently, out of the blue, my wife was contacted by a heir tracing company on behalf of a life insurance firm which held a policy in her fathers name before he died.

The tracing company have sent my wife’s details (current address etc) off to the insurance company and advised us they will now contact us direct. Her parents were divorced before he died so she is his heir.

We don’t expect much to come of it, the insurance firm probably want to know how he died so they can close the policy and that will be the end of it. Even if there was a payout, surely the insurance company will void the policy as soon as they learn he died from complications linked to drinking? I believe it states this on the death certificate.

Maybe they have already seen the death certificate? If so, why have they gone to all this trouble to track down my wife many years later?

Time will tell I guess. I would appreciate your comments on this.

Thanks,
Sideways.

Life assurance isn't underwritten at point of claim, it's done at point of application. As long as he was truthful in answering the questions on the application, a claim should be settled regardless of cause of death.
