nope. I would never have dreamt of using it.

They may, as in are legally allowed to do it, whether they can is a different question and I don't know the answer. I'd have thought that if your facebook page is secure in that you only allow friends to view it, work would not be able to track it. But maybe someone else will know.

Actually - thats just made me wonder about a different aspect. That is - if ones employer was spying on Facebook entries made on a "private" friends only thing - then wouldnt the company be infringing the Human Rights Act (ie right to privacy)?

In fact - I wonder if they would be infringing that right even if all they were doing was spying on a "public" page on Facebook...

But I would have thought that definitely a "private" page would amount to them infringing privacy if they were reading it...
  • NOTHING on facebook is private.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

There doesn't need to be a policy about it; and if you do that you might well be back here next week trying to appeal the dismissal.

A little childish don't you think?

Indeed ..........and if anyone is in any doubt, there are numerous past posters on here who have encountered 'difficulties' with their employer because of Facebook.

As many others have suggested...........don't mention your companies name and certainly don't use FB in company time.....you are asking for trouble.

The only good advice (apart from not using Facebook at all) is never mention anything about work, whether you specify where you work or not. If you can be identified then where you work, who you work for and which manager you are slagging off can be identified by someone. It is really, really, easy - and that is sufficient for "bringing the employer into disrepute" - you do not need to name them! And anyone who thinks that a little information can't be expanded into a lot of information should try reading the "Milkshock" thread! An "anonymous" poster, careless with information on a number of sites including facebook and twitter, was quite certain that nobody here could find out who he was or where he worked. Several total strangers took all of seconds to prove him wrong. Do you really think an employer can't do it - when you will carelessly let people you work with be friends, get your privacy settings wrong, or otherwise advertise your presence and views.

Its just common sense but does this go out the window where facebook is concerned. Do not put the employer in a bad light(you shouldnt even say anything bad about a co worker ebing a b!tch etc) even if its true do not put it as a status but keep it to yourself.

You could try changing your settings to private so non friends cant see the posts but then you have to worry about co workers who you thought were friends as they could turn into a snitch and dob you in. If you can control yourself when on FB then cancel the account.

At work we have been informed that if we state our companies name on Facebook it is highlighted at there I.T department. If we mention our company in a bad way we may be disciplined but it's ok to mention in a good way...double standards I feel but never mind!

Can my company do this? I feel it's very Big Brother is watching you! I was under the impression it was free speech? Does this mean now if I mention any company in a bad way I'm at risk of being sued possibly? In fairness my day can't get any worse so I might try and report back on it ;)

People forget that free speech means being able to say what you want, but also suffering the consequences that come with making such free speech. You can disparage your company on Facebook if you like, but do not be surprised if they choose to dismiss or sue you.

You risk being sued if the content in your Facebook posts amount to libel. At the very least your company will have grounds to dismiss you.

Assuming that your posts do not contain any specific content and is more in the line of "My company So-and-so Ltd sucks in general", you are unlikely to be sued successfully. However you will end up causing tension in the workplace and that of course will not benefit you. Depending on your employment contract, your employers might be able to find an excuse to dismiss you.

If work is so bad that it warrants you stating so in public, I think a career change should be your next consideration.

Unless, of course, your company permit it during break times, as mine does.

The problem is we all have bad days at work. I'm not the sort of person that will say xxx is the worest company in the world BUT I want to be able to write I've had a bad day and if someone asks why to say works been bad. I don't want to have to worry what I write! If a company wasn't bad to work for there would be no need to say it was.

To be honest is it really necessary to tell people if you have had a good or bad day, and if it is can you not just ring them?

If someone writes that a company is bad to work for then clearly it creates perceptions for other people, and isn't something an organisation would want you to document. It is always something that will get people into trouble. Any comment about work, whether naming the company or not, whether overtly negative or just an observation, is always running the risk of trouble...... best avoided!!
