I am not an employee. Benefits in kind rules apply to employees.
Stop splitting hairs, not declaring your income correctly to gain benefits is morally dubious at best and fraud at worst.
As I've said before, I've advised people the benefit people have targeted and they are generally very unhappy. Never forget, HRMC have way more powers than the police and are usually very happy to implement them.
I had a lecture once on this subject and the lecturer said if you ever have the choice, pick the police to investigate you, it will be way less thorough.0 -

Not splitting hairs. The benefits people have my full accounts. They go through every line and they disallowed one expense and that was Class 2 National Insurance contributions as my income was not high enough to be compelled to pay it.
Ahhhh ok that makes things clear, in the event of an HMRC audit your justification would be that the council approved your housing benefit claim ...... I know its Friday night, but have you been drinking?0 -
Sorry to ask this final tax related question...
If I haven't kept all my bus tickets then I should probably not claim them as expenses as I couldn't prove that I used the bus?

I was wondering about this, as I've discovered that the print on my bus tickets apparently seems to magically disappear after a while!
They have all been kept in an envelope in a closed folder thing, so it's not that they've faded, but I recently found I just had an envelope of plain bus tickets?!?
Just have to cross my fingers that they are never needed. Don't often use the bus, but still!Half of November Make £10 a Day Challenge: £51/ £1700 -

haha in the begining I was very good at keeping my receipts for everything. And then I started not putting them away.. and then they get lost...
I have to hope a company doesn't want the receipt from a visit the other day as I lost it on the way home!
I'm asking my mum to ask the guy that does her self assessment for advice on all the stuff that's been mentioned on here the last few days :P (just to be on the safe side!)0 -
I think that I have only done 2 none paying jobs, one jewellery job and one restaurant job. Neither were linked with other work. apart from that never work without pay - its bad both for tax AND for the fact it encourages our clients (i.e. MS companies) that reimbursement only is worth while. Never good................ Have you ever wondered what
