Or even diesel
On the OP, what’s the mechanism by which a failed turbo wrecks an engine, make it run like crap I can see but wreck it?0 -
The biggest things that can cause engine damage in a car with a turbo are drivers. Turbo cars require nothing less than premium fuel, and if you don't use premium, it can cause damage from detonation. Also, if something goes wrong, and it makes too much boost, it can cause engine failure. Also, must be right on schedule with oil changes and other maintenance
What utter rubbish..... Turbo cars can be either diesel or petrol. Tell me what fuel station sells different cetane levels of diesel. And as mentioned before by Hammyman the base level fuel for all modern turbo petrol engines is 95ron. Why do you think petrol turbos have knock sensors... which allow ecu's to retard ignition timing.
OP. Can you give us some more details on the car, what engine and where you had the original work done.0 -
For a turbo to wreck an engine... your looking at the turbine/compressor disintegrating and being injested into the cylinder bores via the cylinder head..... which is unlikely .... unless you were reving the nuts out of the engine and running at high boost when it failed.0
-
Is incorrect. They can use either normal 95RON or super unleaded.
Strictly speaking its not actualy untrue, its more of a case here that by using premium brands as recomended by the makers you will have better performance and a longer lasting engine.
After all 7k for an engine suggests the car is an expensive one and I doubt having an expensive car that you would want to put in value oil and fuel to run it.
Its not meant as a misleading post it is as suggested by a lot of car makers and also mechanics would often state dont put in cheap oil or fuel especialy in an expensive car.0 -
"Cheap" (as in the wrong grade/spec) oil yes I agree .... "cheap" (as in 95 rather than 97/99 ron) fuel no.... makes no difference apart from performance or economy. As the ECU just retards the ignition to prevent detonation (knock)0

It all sounds to dodgy that a brand new 7k engine would go on a turbo unless they had put some utter crap in it,0 -
Do you have any experience in this kind of thing ?
There could be a whole host of things that have caused this, but I will bet BIG money it's not the fuel. But lets concentrate on the turbo for a second... and some asumptions.
A few assumptions first for ease of discussion..... Lets say this a petrol turbo engine. The engine has been replace by a main dealer. They've put a short block engine in (maybe even a new head as well) and reconnected all ancils.
Now if the turbo did indeed self destruct and force it's in-erds into the head/block then it's more than likely down to over boosting (waste gate fault / recirc value / boost leak etc) or oil feed starvation to the turbo (usually down to blocked oil lines / failing oil pump / wrong oil)
For the ten years I've been working on vehicles I've yet to see an engine let go through detonation/knock. In fact the only time I've seen it happen is on a race engine when we had the compression ratio's wrong and put the wrong values in the ecu fueling map.0 -

If the bearings collapse then the compressor vanes can quite easily contact the housing resulting in much "shrapnel" which can enter the engines internals.
Even with gentle use the turbo can be spinning @ 25000-50000 rpm, doesn't take much at those speeds. It's all speculation though as we don't know exactly how the turbo has "blown"Turbo cars require nothing less than premium fuel
I thought all cars sold new in the UK had to be set up to use 95 ron fuel.... could be wrong on that though??Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

I’ve got one of each, on the petrol one there is about 4 feet of assorted tube and an intercooler between turbo & cylinder head, on the diesel it’s much the same.
I can’t see that any debris would make it no matter what sort of boost you we running and anyway, anything bigger than about 2mm would get stuck in the intercooler tubes. (and that’s before you consider that once the impeller is in bits you have no boost and so are relying on engine vacuum to transport the debris)
I think they are spinning the OP a line to try & avoid fixing a defective engine0 -

Yes which is why I said unlikely. But it is possible (I've done it). We need more info from the OP.
The car/age/engine type
Where the work was done
Why the orig engine was replace
What was actually replaced (short block / long engine / just the head ...... )0
