  • cheers for this - i really need to make her aware of what she is letter her self in for. Can't really tell you what i want to do to the builder but if i did it would really upset mum and that’s the last thing i want to do. I'd rather put across the issues you guys have mentioned above and hopefully she will see sense

You really do need to get her to stop. ASAP.

But you need to do it without her alerting the builders or they may stop a cheque she's already cashed for them.

If she won't, then try talking quietly to her bank manager about the situation, they may prevent her doing it in future.

Only go to the police as a last resort (or after the last cheque has safely cleared, ie ten days or more) to prevent the builders stopping it in retaliation.

It's almost certainly 'only' tax evasion, as opposed to anything really sinister, but your mum really doesn't want to be involved when the nasty stuff hits the fan.

As has been previously mentioned cheques can take up to 6 months to bounce thats why she sHOULD tell the police and the bank NOW!

The term 'Money Laudering' springs to mind....
Reporting this to the police may lead to the arrest of your mother, as well
    as the builders.

If it did lead to the arrest of the mum in all this then the Police wouldn't charge her. They are after the big fish today not the little old lady who's doing a favor to someone - i mean no offense saying your mum is a little old lady - They would more than likely tell hr off though to make sure she doesn't get taken in again. Up to now it isn't known if these guys have done this to another elderly person or this is the first time they have done it. If the OP goes tot he cop station and asks to speak to the duty inspector - a real cop not a support worker- they will know what to do discreetly, if at all worried he could just say he knows someone it is happening to and what will happen to the person being used. The sooner this is dealt with the soon the OP Will be able to stop worrying :) Ther are some very good Police officers out there, far more good ones than bad ones :T

hopefully the above is true but it would definitely be classed as moey laundering, dont tell the builders what you are doing though.

under money laundering regs you can be charged with tipping off which is serious.

go to the police and let them deal with it, there is clearly a reason why these builders arent using their own bank account.

thinking about it, if theyre not declaring any of the money wouldnt that make the company look a bit odd, ie not turning over any money yet clearly trading!
  • dont know to much about the company or the chaps she is dealing with - today was there pay day so i camped out at mums hoping to see them but they didnt show.

i think we can assume theyre not particularly savoury characters!

I must admit, what first sprung to mind is the builder is a bankrupt and doesn't have a bank account and is quite likely running a business illegally.

Hope you get this sorted asap and your mum is ok.

Only where the bank find a problem with the cheque, when they can void it.

The originator of the cheque can't go along to his bank after it's cleared and say, "Oh, I've changed my mind, stop that cheque!" any time in the next six months.

When did she bank the last of these cheques?
