Bed Room Cupboard to Ensuite

Do we have anyone here who is a Plumber/Builder who could give me some advice on converting my Bedroom Cupboard into a Shower Room, or someone else done something similar.

One of my dads friends had a quick look and said that it wasnt going to be big enough but i think he based that on a regular Square Shower Cubicle and not a Corner Shower. But another person said he imagined a corner one would work.

If I measure the Cupboard or even take some pics, could someone give me their opinions.

When I bought the House it was my objective to have Ensuite as the Bathroom is very small and doesnt have a Shower.

I did think of a Corner Shower, Square Shower or even if to have Cupboard tiled and made to be an Open Shower, if that makes sense, I mean no cubicle

Looking to get some concrete ideas and possibilities in my mind to look at price and then maybe get some ppl to take and look and quotes. I feel guilty dragging ppl out for free quotes at this stage.

I have no idea of possible costs

Lee

P.S I want it to be an Electric Shower and not run off the Gas Central Heating Water

The first thing I'd say is that the smallest shower trays are 700 x 700 IIRC and if they are still made. Unless you are an agoraphobia flat race jockey, you will find them very small and uncomfortable. The minimum I'd go for is 800 x 800, but there are 760 x 760 available. Please bear that in mind and have a measure up.

You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

  • Ok ive just done a quick measuring of the Cupboard and drawn bit of a sketch in Paint. Have marked on all the measurements of the Walls etc.

The Dark lines on the outsides are just to show where the measurements start and end. The Square in the middle Ive drawn as the shower Tray as you mentioned earlier 70*70 & 80*80. i think ive displayed the 80*80, but as you can see it would hand across the Doorway. I still think depending on what kind of Doors the Shower had that there would be enough room.

    Any observations?

the major issue i would see would be where does the drain pipe feed to, you may need to build a raised platform so it can feed under floor to a drainage point .

personaly i would build a wet room, you dont have enough room for a toilet and can keep a sink in one, have the full room and inside door tiled, electric underfloor heating and an extractor fan venting outside to prevent damp.
  • I wasnt going to have a toilet or anything. Just simply the Shower.

Is a wet room, a room fully tiled and you just let the water go everywhere kinda thing and drains away? oh wait i didnt read properley, yes. My mam suggested this type the other day. Are they more expensive.

Not sure if this is important, the wall to the Left of the Door (35inch wall) on the otherside of this is where the Stairs are

I should have mentioned that the Wall directly opposite the Door is an External Wall, which may be useful for drainage pipes?

there is a 700 x 700 tray still made and amazingly we can still get a 610 by 610 tray, but as bob says even the 700 is small to say the least. from you measurements i would guess a 900 x 700 tray I think they exist i would have to check may be an option for you . the door opening how does that relate to the bedroom? just done one for client and suggested that the door was in line with the cupboards at front giving valuable extra room to the ensuite but this may not be applicable. depending on the door in, openinghanding gap etc you may have to be careful on the shower door, but let me know and can advise. tray option much simpler and cheaper but how about putting wetroom with wall hung w.c and basin with the 'shower door' as the entrance. this might set you back a fair bit but could look really smart and there are specialist products out there that may allow this to be possible, but v neat but just possible.

I did something similar with built in bedroom cupboards. I made a wetroom. Fully tiled walls, and the floor was tiled with special adhesive used in swimming pools. worked fine and still watertight 18 months later.
  • Any chance you could take some pics so I can get an idea.
How much did it cost u?

Don't just think about square shower trays. You can get ones with a corner angled or rounded off, which might give you more room?

Here's some pictures just to show what is available:

Just thought it might give you some more ideas!
Here I go again on my own....

If you want to sell your home later with an ensuite rather than a cupboard you will need to apply for building regs approval to do the work. Contact building standards department at your local council. They usually dfo an onsite visit to give you advice for free.
