No claims bonus rulings

This is my first blog so bear with me but I cant believe what the insurance companies are doing. The story begins:
I drive a mini cooper convertable - insured fully comp with ++++ no claims (in fact Ive never had a claim, or a point on my licence). I am also insured on my husbands company car - AUDI A4. What I am trying to say is that I am a responsible driver. My son got into a bit of a pickel financially and had verbally agreed to buy a second hand Vauxhall Corsa from a guy who would break his legs rather than be reasonable !!!! The conclusion was that I bought the car,
taxed it and insured it with Swift Cover. Basically the cheepest cover i could get, under the circumstances. The car is parked at my house on the drive, blocked in by the MINI, and Swift have been nagging for my !!!!!! of NCD. I emailed over my cover from Aviva but they are now telling me that they cant/wont accept this as it already covers a car, namely my MINI.
In this country we insure the person, therefore I have no claims regardless of what car Im driving. Should i not be entitled to my NCD. In South Africa for example you insure the car, therfore once insured anyone can drive it. It makes borrowing a car a lot easier.

Where do i stand, can anyone help before I contact SWIFT.
Oh and they are threatening now to charge me for changing the policy - £30 + what everever the cost will be without the No Claims Discount ...... !!!!

HELP
Thanks
AJR

You cannot use NCD for one vehicle if it already being used for another. You should have applied on the basis of no NCD. You will be asked to pay the increased premium, or the insurer may void the cover from inception if it would not have provided cover without the NCD.

In this country we insure the car as well just with specific drivers (with an option for 3rd party cover for any drivers on a lot of policies), therefore (as above) your NCD is currently assigned to the Mini.

AJR, quick question. Who is the main user of the corsa? If it's your son are Swift aware. You may have another problem here if you are fronting for him. Do check this out if you haven't already

Hi, as above, if you bought the car for your son then it is his car and you should be using his NCD not yours.

Be very carefull because if they consider you are 'fronting' they could end up cancelling the policy and you would then have to declare that you have had insurance cancelled and would find it very difficult to get insurance in future.

You are mixing up driver history and NCD which are two separate things. Your history of claims or no claims follows you everywhere and every policy that you are named on.

A NCD is a discrete separate thing which has a series of terms and conditions around it. These T&Cs are ultimately up to each insurer to set as it also is with any NCD Protection they may sell but the industry is fairly well aligned on it all. One of the most universal rules is you can only claim your discount on one policy at a time, though you can hold multiple separate discounts at the same time. Unfortunately you cannot either split or merge discounts together.

As has been said, you need to be careful your not fronting.
  • No Im definatly not fronting him, hell get the car back once he's got a licence. The car hasnt moved since we bought it ... !!

You can get F&TO policies (fire and theft only) if you are certain you wont be taking the car onto a public highway and are willing to risk the tiny chance of its handbrake failing and it rolling down the driveway and causing damage to someone or something. To the public they are more normally called laid up policies

Why not send the tax back for a refund, cancel the insurance and SORN it?

Then when your son gets his licence he can start again with tax/insurance himself.
