You can download legitimate distributions of Windows ISOs, and verify through checking the hashes that they are actual Technet releases.

At the risk of getting flamed, don't you need an OEM/volume licensing install disk to use the product key attached to an OEM PC?

You can download images of Windows 7 directly from Microsoft's distributor.
It is/was also possible with Vista, so by extrapolation(and a little knowledge), it would have been possible to restore the machine of your friend.

The serials on the stickers on my 3 laptops are different to the volume serials in use and originally installed on the machines. When I tried to re-install xp on on of my machines with a sp3 disk it would not accept the serial that had been running on the machine and auto installed using the recovery disk so I had to use the serial on the sticker

I've no reason to flame you, and I'll readily admit I don't know the full ins-and-outs of Windows licensing and SLP, etc. I don't post to put people in their place - just to give accurate information if I know it.

It's better to use an OEM key on an OEM disc, and a retail key on a retail disc. It's not essential, as you can there is the option to use phone activation for an OEM key on a retail disc.

Russ, I only quoted you for relevance, sorry if I implied you were in the habit of flaming. In fact I was referring to others who appeared to be on the verge of belligerence. Didn't want it to turn sour and become like one of the 'which is the best antivirus software' threads
