Download managers usually have a resume option if anything happens to the download in progress, such as the site server crashing or a temporary loss of your internet connection. If you use a download manager, check it has got a resume option

The Opera Browser is/has a nice and simple option.

It will either work or it won't. Just make sure you install the correct version for the key as there are both 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Win 7 and if the previous owner activated a Win 7 Home Premium 32 Bit edition with the key, you wont get very far trying to use the key on the 64 bit edition.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

But then all you do is download the other version and try again.
  • More thanks to you all, I check this forum at least twice a day and learn so much,
I am not looking to pirate Windows 7, just thought I would make use of the license that is tied to the machine. I am using Ubuntu just now, but want to be able to use Photoshop, bought for me as a present, and my old PC, running XP, blew the motherboard. If it was not for the Photoshop I would stick to Linux, I am not an online game player and am not really missing XP that much. Although I have thought of using Skype to keep in touch with my son and that would need Windows too. I am planning to try to dual boot Windows 7 with the Ubuntu. If this doesn't work I will have to buy a copy, or just stick to XP!
One more lesson learnt, I now know what a download manager does. Now my only problem is a slow download speed, I live in a Scottish village, broadband is slow the exchange is in the next village along. I also have to share broadband with two teenagers and a flight simulator junkie.
I hope that I haven't rambled on too much.

Actually the license key doesn't differentiate, and works on both 32bit and 64bit discs. I'm running 64bit Windows 7 despite only being given a 32bit disc with my key.

What matters is the edition, e.g. Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Super Premium Deluxe, Rainbow Swirl, etc.

What is the make and model of the newly purchased machine?

....these kind of posts are never helped by people clearly without a clue comming in and posting garbage.

32-bit and 64-bit versions have no bearing on licensing and activation.

OP is fully licensed as the license on the sticker can never be transferred to other herdware.

    Options include:

    1. grabbing an image of the correct volume licensing install disk, installing and activating.

    2. If you get a correct version of the manufacturers disk and its a 'major brand' machine you might find it automatically activated based on recognising your hardware

    3. alternatively you can get replacement disks from microsoft under certain circumstances.... finding the right point of contact and saying you have a license stickered PC with failed/replaced hard drive and have lost all the disks should spring the right install disk for a small postage fee
  • Can I take these in order please,
It says Home Prem OA on the sticker.
It is HP Compaq, Amd dual core, nothing special fairly low spec. Compaq SG3-120UK, but all I need, even has on board graphics rather than a separate graphics card. Ubuntu runs fine, just would like to have Windows so I can use my Photoshop.
I will try looking at the HP website and see if I can find a contact point, if the license is dedicated to the PC maybe I can get a copy from them. I didn't think you usually got OS disks with the PC if it was OEM?
Once again thanks for taking the time to read this and reply, it is appreciated.

Go ahead; Download and save the 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium x86 SP1 or the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 image to a working PC from the links supplied earlier.
Burn the image to disc(not burn data to disc).

For example: Once the image has been saved to the working computer...

Next, download and install ImgBurn(No need to install the Google Toolbar. Remove the relevant tick). Burn the Image to Disc. Use this as a guide(skip step 2b)

When you are ready, place the newly created disc in the machine, reboot and begin the installation. Install from Boot.
Install the disc normally without entering a Product Key. It should install and leave you with the standard 30 day trial before activation.

Install your Drivers(There is the option on this page to order a set of recovery Discs if you would prefer that method).

Get back to me at this point.
  • Take this,
    Thankyou,
Have to go to work now, so I will be logging out. I will follow your instructions and get back to you if I hit any problems. Might be a couple of days before I can download, the teens grab the internet as soon as they are home from school and college!
