Which is the cheapest Supermarket then?

Goodmorning all! I use Tesco's a lot as it is my nearest supermarket, for quickness (working mum), I also use the petrol station, which often comes up the cheepest on price comparison sites. I often have vouchers sent to me to use. I use the Tesco points to buy free monthly mags( sometimes for gifts).
FREE CARPARK
Sainsbury's is a little bit further but makes a change. I save up my points here to buy my Easter eggs, so get most free! FREE CARPARK
Asda, is the national cheepest(I think) I do like there bedding range and George clothes but have to pay for their carpark as it is near their town centre and can be crowded.
Iceland is cheep, with free home delivery over £25.00.
I find this storefull of prossesed/junk food

There is also the question of quality to be considered: if for example you buy own brands (which are probably all a similar price for the same item), they do vary. I buy tinned tuna in brine (value) for the cat as an occasional treat, tescos is fine once all the liquid squeezed out but sainsburys was like slurry. Same price though.
With baked beans and pork sausage, Sainsburys proper own brand is nicer than tescos (or Heinz, imho) as their sausages are browned.
In our case, if you buy a ticket for an hours parking at sainsburys, you can go round town and buy a fivers worth of milk/bread/offers, and they give you two hours parking back, a profit of 60p.
I find sainsburys expensive and waitrose appalling.0 -
firespire wrote:I find them almost always more expensive here and not by a couple of pence but sometimes a lot - they seem to like rounding prices up, ie. something £1.88 somewhere else is £2 in Iceland although 4 Pints of milk is rounded down to £1 which is the only thing I have ever been able to see as a good price when I visit.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

for me, it has to be asda (and that's coz hubbie works there and gets a staff discount!). But even without the discount I still find them a lot cheaper.
I do have a tesco, asda, sainsburys, m&s and lidls all close to me so I am spoilt for choice. Dip into all of them now and then but ASDA and Lidls are about the best for cheapness (although my fruit/veg and meat is bought from the greengrocers/butchers as I find ASDA stuff no good)0 -
i think asda is generally the cheapest, but morrissons has the best special offers. at the moment lidl has half price fruit and veg which i find really good quality. i also like to check out netto and aldi for special offers. its a good job i enjoy food shopping! it makes it hard to work out my weekly spend though0

I did not realise until today that my original post had posted........
I had not completed it but feel you got the gist of it.
I/we are probably not your average family. Just two middle aged adults although with a single NHS wage living in perhaps the most expensive part of the country.
When purchasing food from whatever source I tend to look at it as price per meal. Last week at the Farmers Market we bought stuffed pheasant breast's four for 6GBP - two meals for 6 GBP + veg. If I remember correctly two pizzas from Asda were 4GBP both seem good value for money.0 -
I would say that
CHEAPEST: Asda & Morrisons
AVERAGE: Tesco & Sainsburys
MOST EXPENSIVE: Waitrose or M&S

I think Tesco do price according to area. I do a weekly on line shop for myself and my mum, the delivery charge is 50p cheaper for her for the same slot.Just when I'm about to make ends meet, somebody moves the ends0

The variation of products do change a lot depending on a location. The tesco near me has a lot of the tesco value products, whereas the tesco near my parents doesn't. Its the same with the Sainsburys as well, most probably because where I am is a studenty area and my parents are on the outskirts of London. That can have quite an impact I think, since IMO the value products are similar to the slightly more expensive own brands.~Diminutive0

I used to work for Somerfield and their prices vary, the store i wirked in was very expensive, but one about 4 miles in a student area was alot cheaper for the same products. If anybody lives near Okehampton they must be loving it for value. I had to go their for training a few years ago, and no offence to the town but all there is, is supermarkets. They've got a large Somerfield, A big Waitrose and a big aldi, all of which are cheap as chips to try and get the custom of all the people that live in the local villages ect.
Anyway i personally think Morrisons is the cheapest store, especially when you take in account their offers, having said that i dont drive so take in account taxi'= fares i just go to Sainsburys, which is probaly just as cheap as tesco's.... and like another poster i also refuse to shop in any tesco store, theres just to many of them and just seem to be taking over the country!October 2006 debt at 11,125.78
