changing tariffs with tmobile

i lost my job in november last year and spoke to tmobile about lowering my tariff to save mony they told me that my monthly line rentle would be the cost of the handset over two years which totals 1500 for a iphone 4 all i want to do is lower my tariff i have had the tariff for 14 months any suggestions and is there a way of me down grading my tariff???:(
