What utter nonsense! I can only assume your experience of hatchbacks is from donkeys years ago.

I have to agree with Trebor, the wife's new C3 Airdream+ has softer seats and a much softer ride than my Grand C4 Picasso, although to be fair, I'd rather drive the Picasso on motorways.

I can see the point r.e a larger ca though I don't think there is any real problem doing reasonable miles in a modern "small" car.

I prefer at least a focus sized car as the extra refinement and comfort makes journeys that little bit nicer. Having said that my current drive has an engine that sits behind my head, stiff suspension and more road/wind noise then any fiesta driver would ever believe and it doesn't bother me.

Well in our current economy drive we are using the Panda much more for the short runs but last weekend we had to do the 70 miles to Edinbugh. We took the Jeep.........lol.

Having said that we have been running the Jeep for a fortnight recently before filling up. Will need to do it again this weekend :(

Hi, I am about to start a new job which will result in me doing around 15 thousand miles a year. I will need to buy a car on a budget of around £3000. I had only been looking at deisel cars but was offered a 1.25 litre petrol fiesta today, 05 plate, only 23,000 miles blah, blah. I was not going to consider it due to it being petrol but friend told me that the mpg would not be that much less, that petrols are cheaper to fix if anything goes wrong and that petrols are cheaper to buy, so more car for your money so to speak.
Any thoughts about the petrol v diesel dilema would be very much appreciated. As you have probably gathered I know very little about cars :o

I'd a 1.25 Zetec Fiesta and it averaged 28mpg. The engine is slightly underpowered for the body hence the engine is always working hard.

No...last Tuesday. Did a trip to Hull in a 09 plate Fiat. Was not a nice experience compared to my Mondeo.

The Mondeo is a hatchback if memory serves me correct. Is that noisy, bumpy and lacks room?

28 mpg  I'd be looking for more than that, I should have said the miles will be 99% motorway driving.

I appreciate all the replies about my comfort in a hatchback, but my main question was about petrol v deisel :p I just need to know if I should go for a petrol or diesel fiesta/corsa etc..

    Cheers again.

Yes but it was a Fiat - probably still made out of tin and some staples.

How about forgetting the small/large car argument and simply buying a car that was designed for the type of driving you do........... A city car was not designed to hammer up and down motorways on the cruise control, a large motorway cruiser was not designed to nip around city centre's and fit into tiny parking spots.
