Petrol v Deisel over 15k miles
Hi, I am about to start a new job which will result in me doing around 15 thousand miles a year. I will need to buy a car on a budget of around £3000. I had only been looking at deisel cars but was offered a 1.25 litre petrol fiesta today, 05 plate, only 23,000 miles blah, blah. I was not going to consider it due to it being petrol but friend told me that the mpg would not be that much less, that petrols are cheaper to fix if anything goes wrong and that petrols are cheaper to buy, so more car for your money so to speak.
Any thoughts about the petrol v diesel dilema would be very much appreciated. As you have probably gathered I know very little about cars

For only £3k choosing a good reliable car is more important than if it is petrol or diesel.
With that it mind the low mileage Fiesta you mentioned might be just the job.0 -
Diesel. £3k buys a MK3 Mondeo.. For diesel being more expensive to buy argument, when you resell, the diesel will fetch more so it is a moot argument.
You don't want to be doing high mileage in a hatchback0 -
Why wouldn't you want to do high mileage in a hatchback?"You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

I didn't think that 15k was that high. I'm not that interested in resale value as it'll be run into the ground. I currently cycle to work so having to buy any car is proving a bit of a sore point !0

Since I have owned cars I have done between 15 and 20k a year. I have owned everything from a Mark 1 Fiesta 1.1 to modern diesels with oodles of power. 15k in a modern hatchback is no problem.0

I wouldn't worry about doing 15k a year in a hatchback. We have a diesel SEAT Ibiza and doing the same mileage for years without any problems at all.0

Noisy, bumpy and lack of room. I can only assume you've never owned anything other than a hatchback.
I've owned all sorts of cars over the years and while my Mazda2 wouldn't be my first choice for 15k a year I certainly would be happy to do that in it. I actually do about 12k a year in it.0 -

What utter nonsense! I can only assume your experience of hatchbacks is from donkeys years ago."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"
