We go to an indepednant shoe shop that makes clarkes look cheap!! My DD has very narrow feet and tends to find only the startrite shoes fit but her school shoes are buckle my shoe ones this time. She has them and 1 other non school pair plus wellies/ snow boots/ crocs depending on time of year!

I buy Start Rite school shoes, then cheaper shoes for the rest of the time. Wellies from Next, trainers from Sports Direct, and crocs and converse. My daughter wants some long leather boots, and previously Ive bought them from Boden, but they cost a fortune and she doesn't get any wear out of them, so I'm going to get some non leather ones from Debenhams. I feel a bit funny about it, but they are a third of the price and I bet she doesn't even wear them 15 times.
  • I try and buy in the Clarkes sale- the next size up from where she is right now.
Has worked for the last 18 months and my daughter is 4.

I used to put my phone number in my DD's clarks shoes, then when she threw one off i'd usually get a phone call to go and pick it up:D:D

I would never buy shoes second hand, as they change shape very quickly depending on the shape of the child's foot and how they walk. So if you buy a pair which have been worn by another child even just for a couple of months, they could be quite subtly distorted and cause problems for your own child. I am another one who buys Clarks shoes and always has them fitted in the store. If they don't have anything which is a perfect fit, I will leave them and go to another Clarks store with a bigger selection.

My DH has horrible feet which I am sure was caused by not wearing properly fitted shoes as a child. His little toe crosses over the fourth toe on both feet and his toes all look crooked. My mum was anal about shoes too when I was a child and while I hated not having high fashion shoes until I was an older teenager, I am now pleased as I have lovely straight toes and have never had a moments trouble with my feet.

I agree, I have really nice feet (if I do say so myself - actually had comments from strangers before!) and i always had to wear Clarkes shoes as a child. I also wasnt allowed to wear fashionable stuff until I was about 15, which I hated at the time.

My DH had awful ill fitting shoes that were mainly too big as a child, as his mum was to busy spending money on carp and now his feet sound like your DHs feet.

Sometimes though if you're going to end up with bad feet you're going to end up with them. My mum always always always had me in Clarks/K/etc shoes as a kid - I still ended up with loads of feet problems as an adult. Nowt more she could have done, despite beating herself up about it, even as a teenager I was very much the doc martens brigade over fashion victim stuff.
