Legally it works the same both ways (there have been cases with the DVLA & SORN recently).yet when things are the other way round they can just say they never received it and you are expected to provide proof that you posted it to them before they will believe you.
However as a pragmatist I prefer to save myself the hassle (of court) and either get a free proof of posting or pay 75p for recorded delivery depending on what is appropriate for the situation.
For example if you send back goods that are "on approval" they still beolong to the company that sent them and provided you have proof you posted then it's not your responsibility to provide proof of delivery (not your problem as they aren't your goods).
If it's an important letter then I use recorded delivery. Legally it should not be necessary but in reality companies will more readily accept proof of delivery than just normal post. Small price to pay IMO when it's important.0 -

If an account has been dormant for a while and a card is expiring, there are good security reasons for not writing to say the account is being closed.0

To be fair to the Royal Mail I strongly suspect that a lot of supposedly 'lost in the post' letters were, in fact, never sent.
I agree that many companies cynically do not send letters in particular where it's in their interests like car insurance renewals where they have a continous card authority and can renew the policy automatically and take payment.
Egg doesn't have a reputation for this and we do share a lot of that type of information on these boards.
I don't know their policy on dormant accounts.0
