I would love to try a holiday in the dordogne. I went as a child about 30 years ago to the area round Rocamadour (?) concarneau and sarlat and loved it - especially the food. My problem is the thought of travelling there by car and ferry (which is what we used to do - combining it with a week in Brittany or the Vendee regions). Has anybody tried flying to this area and renting a car? Is it prohibitively expensive. It would be for 4 people. thanks for any replies.

We flew to Limoges with Ryan Air and hired a car from Europcar (the one with the green logo). Was very reasonable for a 2.0 Golf Deisel. I booked via the French website and got a better deal than I would have in the uk. Once you have decided on the destination airport go to the airport website and check out the hire car companies available (Avis, Hertz, Europcar etc.) and get a online quote to compare with the UK ones. Stick with the known names in car hire as you do get what you pay for and if things do go wrong they have back up in the country and in the UK.
