laptop keyboard needs mending

Hi, I tend to get a few problems with my laptop keyboard, just general wear and tear. If it was a desktop I would simply get a new keyboard, if its a laptop can it be mended cheaply? Or do I have to chuck the whole thing away?

Thanks for advice

Pam

Most laptop keyboards can be replaced quite easily with minimal dismantling if you're careful. I changed my Acer keyboard in about 15 mins after buying a replacment on ebay, and googling for the service manual.

I'm sure the experts on here will help you if you tell us the make & model?

You should be able to gently remove your keyboard of the laptop to replace usually theres a couple of screws holding it down but other than that its generally quite easy to replace.
  • If it's just a couple of keys that are being sticky you could start by blowing compressed air between the keys to remove any debris (bits of food, etc). If you're still having problems you should be able to remove individual keys and clean the contacts - either with compressed air or some switch cleaner.

yes, just get a new keyboard:

1- google for the words "XXX XXXX service manual" where XXXs are the make and model of your laptop, that should point you to a step by step guide of which screws you need to take out in what order to get at the keyboard

2- hop onto ebay and look for a new keyboard, cheap chinese ones tend to be OK but look for one compatible with your exact laptop model, typically from £15#

alternatively post your laptop make and model and maybe someone will look up some links for you
  • Thats very helpful indeed, I am a pensioner and dont want to get ripped off. It looks like its an HP60-200. To be honest I cant quite see the screws you have been talking about but will keep looking. I will have a look on Ebay as you suggested.
When you get a new one does it come with instructions?

Assuming you mean the HP G60-200

    Service manual is here:
    http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c02985882/c02985882.pdf

and removal of the keyboard instructions are on page 56, seems to involve removing the 3 indicated screws under the battery only

double check the model number before ordering a new keyboard... there seems to be at least one ebay seller selling them for just under £20 delivered

(attention drawn to the thanks button for any posts you've found useful :p)
  • Brilliant! Thank you all so much for your replies, its been really helpful.

Make sure that you are getting a UK keyboard. not a US one.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • OK, I have one final query. This laptop has a US layout keyboard, which has always caused me confusion, for some reason the keys arent in the right place. For example if I bash the inverted comma key I get this@ toget a pound sign I have to put the hash key in and I get this £ if I bash @ I get ". I have found a cheap keyboard on Ebay but it says US/UK , Its a nuisance not having the right keys in the right place, any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Pam
  • I need to look for a UK one specifically I suppose?:(
