Hi all,
I have a wordpress website that I am now managing. Before I do anything to it I would like to back it up. I would like ideas on the best and easiest way to backup everything related to my website so I can restore it should the need arise.
Cheers

if you are using cpanel you can simply use the cpanel backup facility but then you have to remember to move this backup to your local computer as it is backed up on the actual server.
another way is to use a sites like

I use a WP Plugin that backs up my sites daily (or weekly) and then emails that to my gmail account. I figure that way if I needed to do a restore I'd always have a backup no matter where I was, or even forward it on easily for somebody to do it for me.
wp-backup is probably the one I use, but search the plugins and see what you fancy
There are other plugins, one I saw the other week that replicates your whole site, which'd also work. I've not tried that one, but it's supposed to be an easy way to grab your site and move it to another host, so that'd work as a backup too.0 -
Maybe I should have said my host is daddy (no I didnt know about the report elephant shooting before I purchaesed) would cspan or something else be available as part of that managment controls when you login ?"The time is always right to do what is right"0

Whatever approach you take, make sure it includes backing up both the database, AND the Wordpress files.
I know the Database backup is the most important, but most people assume they can always just re-install the WP software in the event of a restore. But bear in mind your media/uploaded files are stored in the file system, not the database.
Also, when you come to do a restore, it's always good to be able to just put the files back that you know are correct, instead of trying to determine the various versions of WP and the plugins, then download them.Of course, I may just be talking b****cks!0 -
Wordpress Dashboard -> Tools -> Export -> All content -> Download Export File
For the MYSQL database.....
Log into your CPanel -> click on your MySQL databases -> click export -> save to a safe place on your PCEstate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -

I did the first one in wordpress. But I dont have cpanel but in Go D a found an option to backup the sql database so I selected that but apparently it can take a few hours to do the backup. It didnt seem to give me the option of where I wanted to store the backup though.
I believe that should cover me shouldn't it ?"The time is always right to do what is right"0 -

No chance. I have a 60meg forum database which takes about a minute (if that) to backup.
Who is your host? Never heard of Go D. You would normally have CPanel or WHM.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0 -

That would be go daddy. It seems as though there are systems backups done intermitantly and then you can do user one's on top of that (which I did). it didnt actually take long to do the backup and it aid it was successfully."The time is always right to do what is right"0 -

all doesnt seems well now though....
I went to restore a previous backup that I did ealier today via Wordpress Export. When I came to import it, it gave me a list of plugins to allow me to import. I choose WordPress Importer seemed a logical choice and I did a restore....the problem is now I seem to have two of everything on my website menus
How can I get this back to normal ? When I look in the pages option there only seems to be one of each page !
Phew I havwe got it back to normal there were 2 pages on the widget menu option so just removed one of each page...."The time is always right to do what is right"0
