Elective c-sections.

The amount of horrendous stories I've heard about C Section has me dreading if I have any complications. A relatives wife had to have an emergency C Section and the surgeon ruptured her bowel, and she has to have a colostomy bag now. Obviously there are good and bad surgeons out there but things like that really scare me.
I think people on here are just trying to get the point accross to the OP that having a section may not be the bed of roses she thinks it might be, just putting a bit of perspective on it.0 -
Just to abate your fears a little but i was lucky i have had 3 fantastic surgeons (1 i had twice) and have the neatest scare going..... now if only i can find one that would do a tummy tuck at the same time i would have been even happier lol x
Some people are obviously good at there craftI've met my consultant and I imagine he's one of the better ones, was so gentle and precise with scanning me, so if anyone gets him they'd be lucky I think.
The frontier is never somewhere else. And no stockades can keep the midnight out.0 -
I had an emerg cs 1st time around, 2nd pregnancy I was also under consultant care, but I still had to FIGHT for another c section! If you knew me personally you'd know I'm a very strong person - but i absolutely BROKE when confronted to the small minded (female) Senior House Officer I had to see...I felt defeated. Next visit @ to the consultant (30-ish weeks?), that Registrar (male) heard my side, read all my notes inc past birth experience & BOOKED me in @38 weeks THAT DAY. Only a Registrar or Consultant can book you in for one from what I understand...stick to your guns & the later you are the more likely it seems they will book it for you. I live in Worcs if that helps - good luck, hope it goes really well xx0

Throwing my experiences in...I had an elective when my baby was breach and would have been difficult to turn. I was given a choice by my consultant (in London) but that was 13 years ago. They are really trying to cut back because of the cost of them. I recovered quickly, but no driving for six weeks after, no heavy lifting either, can have an impact on lifestyle. And I was 21 at the time...the older you are, the longer it takes to recover.
Afterwards, I felt cheated, as though I hadn't earned the right to have my baby. We will be trying again soon and I want to have a natural birth. If I couldn't drive for 6 weeks, I wouldn't be able to go anywhere easily as I live in a village now. Then again....if I had an instrumental delivery, I might feel differently. I would really try to voice your concerns clearly, and that it is causing you distress, and put it to them in writing and see what happens.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

I do become a hypocrite in saying that I want a Home water birth but i feel being in a hospital and strapped to a monitor constantly contributed to the awkward positioning of baby and the need for instruments.
So why don't you go for the homebirth? (water or dry land it's up to you) I do agree if the forceps were due to a badly positioned baby that your best chance of avoiding forceps would be to stay active.
Maybe presenting the two options to the obstetricians would get an result you can be happy with0 -
i guess it depends where you are in the country.
i'm in scotland and asked the midwife if electives was possible and was told no. however when pregnant with ds1 found out i had the group b strep infection. i point blank refused to push my baby out through that (what a start to life!) and asked for an elective (giving my reasoning) and was given one.
for ds2 i was just so exhausted at my last appointment i just asked if i could have one - i was massive and am only 5ft on a good day with heels - and consultant agreed.
just ask for a consultant appointment. explain your feelings and how mentally scarred and stressed you are from the last three and want this one to be different. they do take everything into consideration. it's not just being too posh to push syndrome.
xx
Oh, so elective c-sections are another thing you can get free in Scotland that you can't in England!;)0 -

I had a similar experience - I was told by the surgeon whilst still on the operating table first time around that I should just be booked in for a section for any subsequent pregnancies, no questions asked. When it came to my second pregnancy, my midwife (obviously having some sort of crystal ball!) filled my notes with all these reasons why I should be booked in, but at 20 weeks I saw this young woman in the ante-natal clinic (I'm assuming she must have been a SHO or similar) and her attitude stank. She did all but call me a liar when I explained the situation, seemed to think I was making it up when I told her what the surgeon had said first time around, and would probably have had me on my knees grovelling if she could). So she referred me to the proper consultant and when I saw him afew weeks later I was prepared for a battle and he just went "when shall we book you in for"! Of course DS had other ideas ..........
JxAnd it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end0 -
Ravenlady, speak to your consultant.
Unfortunately, unless you pay for a private section, you cannot dictate how your delivery is managed - be realistic.
Sections are not without risks, it is a sugical procedure after all and the recovery period is longer. Plus your baby doesn't get that 'squeeze' through the birth canal which actually reduces the time it takes for them to start breathing by squeezing all the fluid out of their lungs.0 -

Blimey! What do they teach these SHO's? I'll NEVER forget my horrendous one - I believe she was either from Oz or NZ..perhaps the same one?!0
