You would still need to buy and fit another Gig or two of RAM; effectively voiding the Argos warranty.(A stated policy of their repairers D&J Henry. Most strange). Also no webcam.
So perhaps best left on the shelf.

You cannot void a warranty by upgrading the RAM. This has been tested in court and previous case precedence exists.

It is an entry level model that they can't sell that is quite gutless. I have seen THOUSANDS of these brand new in sealed boxes going through stock clearance auctions at Pyes in Nottingham. They've been CPW so CPW can't even give them away it would seem.

Also when Tesco were pushing these, a few shops I supply were getting people bringing them in with broken screen hinges, missing keys. They really are built down to a price.

    Yes you can.
A warranty is not a statutory right and a retailer or manufacturer is totally within their rights to make a condition that upgrading the RAM will invalidate it.

What you can't do by simply upgrading the RAM is to void your statutory rights as given by the SOGA.
  • It's a bit like retailers or manufacturers who say that to activate their warranty you must register by returning a card or doing it online.
They can quite legally insist that you do this and failure to do so can, and usually will invalidate the warranty that they offer.

But, as stated by hermione granger, these clauses or requirements can have no effect on your legal rights with the retailer or manufacturer (if goods were purchased directly from them).

Wrong. This has been tested in court when manufacturers said the warranty was void because the "warranty void" sticker was broken when the computer was opened to upgrade it. I'm not just making it up - there is legal precedence. You cannot void the warranty on a machine designed to be upgraded by the user which a laptop and PC are. If they weren't, the RAM wouldn't be in a slot under a cover on the base and the hard drive would not be in a caddy, again easily removable.

This could well be an urban myth, unless of course you know of any links to official websites that could confirm this.
This topic gets mentioned on many techie forums, yet to the best of my knowledge, no one has ever been able to show when or where this legal precedence was set.

Many warranties impose conditions on the purchaser of the goods but as the warranty is not in most cases a statutory right, these conditions are perfectly legal.

Nevertheless, The re-furbisher for Argos Outlet (D&J Henry) claim that the warranty will be void if you insert your own RAM. :)
So that is another good reason for leaving that laptop on their shelves.
  • Umm i think your find there is quite a few things that void warranty on laptops..... I had one crash and a friend rebooted it only for it not to work so i took it in and they said ''sorry you have voided the warranty''

There aren't a few things that void the warranty. Yours was one thing that doesn't void the warranty. You merely allowed the retailer to fob you off the same as Argos manage to do with people with their 28 day return policy.

It isn't urban !!!!!!! myth. It was widely reported at the time. It was in the late 1990's/early 2000's so as usual Google is of sod all help as usual.

I've been doing this a lot longer than you have and no, just because you can't find it in a 5 minute search on Google doesn't mean it didn't happen.
